Position Overview:

The APP Psychiatry and Mental Health Fellowship is a comprehensive 12-month educational initiative aimed at enhancing the skills of advanced practice providers (APPs) in the mental health sector, particularly focusing on underserved communities. This program is designed for APPs who are eager to engage in a structured learning environment that fosters the development of advanced clinical judgment and the application of specialized competencies in managing patients with mental health disorders through direct instruction and supervised clinical practice.

Program Objectives:

The Fellowship provides specialized healthcare services within the defined scope of practice, collaborating closely with licensed psychiatrists while adhering to established institutional policies and procedures. This academic clinical partnership encompasses the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, among other affiliates. It offers a thorough, longitudinal transition to practice residency in mental health, concentrating on underserved populations in community-based environments. Participants will experience interdisciplinary teamwork across various life stages, including core clinical rotations in diverse outpatient settings and inpatient facilities, elective rotations in specialized clinics, and educational experiences.

Work Schedule: The position requires adaptability concerning clinical rotations that encompass both inpatient and outpatient environments.

Learning Expectations and Outcomes:

  • Advanced Assessment: Integrates comprehensive data to manage patients with acute and complex chronic conditions.
  • Differential Diagnosis: Evaluates and prioritizes potential health issues based on clinical data.
  • Outcomes Identification: Establishes goals that align with scientific evidence and patient preferences.
  • Care Planning: Develops and modifies care plans collaboratively with an interprofessional team.
  • Treatment Implementation: Executes therapeutic interventions and monitors their effectiveness.
  • Care Evaluation: Continuously assesses patient responses and adjusts care plans accordingly.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conducts thorough psychiatric evaluations and histories, recognizing both normal and abnormal findings.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests.
  • Creates both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment strategies.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of care plans.
  • Educates patients regarding their health conditions and treatment options.
  • Performs procedures as per training and credentials.
  • Documents all relevant information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Collaborates with healthcare professionals as necessary.
  • Provides education and support to patients and families regarding health maintenance and preventive care.

Minimum Qualifications:

Nurse Practitioners: Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's or Doctoral Program, National Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric-Adult Nurse Practitioner, or Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in Wisconsin.

Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant master's program and certification by the NCCPA, along with licensure as a Physician Assistant in Wisconsin.
