Position Overview:

The Department of Medicine - Division of Hematology and Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin is in search of a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to enhance the Hematology/Oncology and BMT Inpatient services in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Our dedicated team comprises MD and PhD faculty, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, researchers, and administrative personnel, all committed to delivering patient-centered clinical care and advancing research aimed at improving treatments for cancer and blood disorders. Our proficiency encompasses all facets of medical oncology, including the management of solid tumors, hematologic cancers, bone marrow transplantation, and cellular therapies. We also focus on providing exceptional care for non-cancerous blood disorders, such as bleeding and clotting issues.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, contributing to excellence in program management, patient care, safety, research, quality enhancement, and education.

Ideal Candidate Profile: The successful candidate will be an experienced APP or clinician with a background in managing HemOnc/BMT patients in an inpatient or hospital context, eager to engage in a collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to diagnose and treat conditions necessitating Hematology/Oncology/BMT intervention in an inpatient setting.
  2. Document accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  3. Order, conduct, and interpret screening and diagnostic tests, ensuring effective communication and documentation of findings.
  4. Perform procedures beyond core competencies as designated by the Hematology/Oncology/BMT services.
  5. Facilitate communication with patients, families, and staff to ensure continuity of care.
  6. Participate in mandatory training and meet key regulatory standards.
  7. Evaluate quality outcomes for patients under the care of this team by engaging in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboards.
  8. Stay informed on the latest developments and trends in the Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner fields through educational programs and current literature.
  9. Engage in ongoing clinical research initiatives related to hematology, oncology, and BMT.

Core Responsibilities of Advanced Practice:

  • Conduct comprehensive histories and physical examinations, identifying normal and abnormal findings.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic tests, ensuring effective communication of results.
  • Develop both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment strategies.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of care plans.
  • Educate patients regarding their conditions and treatment options.
  • Perform procedures as per training and credentialing.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete necessary documentation.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers as necessary.
  • Educate and assist patients and families on health issues and preventive measures.
  • Remain updated on the latest trends in the Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner fields.
