The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene is on the lookout for qualified individuals to fill two (2) full-time positions as Research Strategy Specialists. These specialists will support human subjects researchers at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) throughout the various stages of a research project, including initiation, implementation, management, and conclusion.

NYSPI, founded in 1895, has been a pioneer in integrating education, research, and therapeutic practices in the treatment of mental health disorders. The research conducted at NYSPI encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, from fundamental neurobiology to clinical and epidemiological studies, as well as child psychiatry and service-related research. The institute is also engaged in numerous clinical trials addressing conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder, often providing treatment at no cost to participants. Currently, there are nearly 500 externally funded projects with a total budget of $86 million, primarily supported by federal funding.

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Strategy Specialist will undertake the following duties:

  • Initiation Phase: Provide researchers with essential guidance on critical considerations during the planning of research projects. This includes advising on necessary documentation such as consents, advertisements, and data access plans. Additionally, assist researchers in navigating human and non-human research concepts and direct them to the appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) representatives for official outcomes.
  • Implementation Phase: Advise research teams on strategies to minimize risks during study execution. Offer real-time training during Site Initiation Visits and support the enrollment process. For funded projects, ensure alignment between IRB processes and grant administration.
  • Management Phase: Serve as a resource for researchers to discuss potential modifications to studies, ensuring that any changes are addressed with the same thoroughness as at the project's inception. Confirm that funding alterations are reflected in the research protocol and assist in fulfilling ongoing reporting requirements.
  • Conclusion Phase: Provide information regarding closeout requirements, including record retention, reporting obligations, and follow-up with federal programs or agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a Human Research Protections Program within an academic medical center.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in writing and reviewing research protocols and/or submitting them to the IRB.
  • One or more years of experience as a Clinical Research Associate or Research Coordinator.
