New York, New York, United States New York State Psychiatry Institute Full time
Job Overview

Position Title: Research Strategy Specialist

Grade Level: 25

Compensation: $92,055 - $111,115

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene is in search of qualified individuals to fill two (2) full-time positions as Research Strategy Specialists. These specialists will support human subjects researchers at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) throughout various stages of a research project, including initiation, implementation, management, and conclusion.

Established in 1895, NYSPI is a pioneering institution in the United States, integrating education, research, and therapeutic practices in the treatment of mental health disorders. The research conducted at NYSPI encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, from fundamental neurobiology to clinical, epidemiological, child psychiatry, and service-related studies. The institute is also home to numerous clinical trials addressing conditions such as depression, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder, offering treatment within the framework of ongoing research, typically at no cost to participants. Currently, there are nearly 500 externally funded projects with a combined budget of $86 million, predominantly supported by federal funding.

Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Research Strategy Specialist include:

  • Initiation Phase: Provide guidance to researchers on essential considerations during the planning of research projects. This includes information on departments to consult and necessary preparations prior to submitting a proposed human subject research project, such as consent forms, advertisements, and data access plans.
    • Support for the research community will involve offering insights on human and non-human research concepts, directing researchers to the appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) representatives for official outcomes, and supplying information on relevant New York state, OMH, RFMH, and facility regulations.
    • Assistance will also be provided in navigating local resources for obtaining Material Transfer Agreements, Data Use Agreements, Business Associate Agreements, and other contracts essential for establishing or maintaining proprietary interests.
  • Implementation Phase: Advise researchers on strategies to minimize risks during study execution. Provide real-time training as researchers conduct Site Initiation Visits and commence participant enrollment. For funded projects, collaborate with research teams to ensure alignment between IRB processes and grant administration.
  • Management Phase: Serve as a resource for discussing potential modifications to studies, ensuring that any changes are considered with the same thorough approach taken during the initiation phase. Confirm that funding changes are accurately reflected in the study protocol, assisting in maintaining grant congruence. Support researchers in fulfilling ongoing reporting requirements.
  • Conclusion Phase: Offer guidance on closeout requirements, which may include record retention, reporting, and follow-up obligations to federal programs or agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a Human Research Protections Program within an academic medical center.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in writing and reviewing research protocols and/or submitting protocols to the IRB.
  • One or more years of experience as a Clinical Research Associate or Research Coordinator.

Work Location: New York, NY
