Our assets include two cement production facilities, three cement import terminals, a network of rail distribution terminals, six aggregate quarries/mines, over eighty company-owned ready-mix concrete plants, and ten fly ash processing/distribution sites.

Role Overview:

The Environmental Manager position, based in Norfolk, VA, is a salaried exempt role reporting to the Vice President of Mid Atlantic Ready Mix. This role involves independent work and is responsible for providing technical and engineering support on environmental matters across all facilities within the division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage environmental initiatives for the division, ensuring that standards are effectively communicated and upheld.
  • Secure all necessary environmental permits for the construction and operation of assigned facilities, negotiating permit conditions to minimize operational burdens, and developing and implementing environmental management plans as required.
  • Establish and execute an environmental management program to regularly assess compliance at assigned facilities, communicate non-compliance issues to management, and devise effective corrective measures.
  • Address and resolve compliance inquiries, acting as the liaison between regulatory agencies and facility operations.
  • Assist in planning and provide engineering support for modifications to existing facilities or the construction of new ones to comply with environmental and land use regulations.
  • Ensure that compliance requirements are clearly communicated, and maintain records for environmental monitoring and reporting.
  • Conduct training for company employees on relevant environmental regulations and policies.
  • Stay informed on federal, state, and local environmental laws, advising management on changes and their implications for the business.
  • Research and implement environmental improvement programs to enhance overall environmental performance.
  • Travel to various locations within the division for inspections, audits, or research related to environmental issues.
  • Engage in industry trade association committees to enhance knowledge of environmental issues and proactively address regulatory changes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in a heavy industrial environment, including 5-7 years in a management role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of air quality and water standards, including monitoring and reporting practices.
  • Proven experience in managing environmental programs with a solid understanding of federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Ability to comprehend technical, regulatory, and external factors affecting environmental programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with regulatory agencies and ensure compliance.
  • Experience in auditing and inspecting industrial operations to identify environmental compliance issues.
  • Capability to develop and implement effective environmental compliance strategies and management systems.
  • Excellent communication skills to relay compliance activities to plant employees.
  • Proficiency in preparing environmental permit applications and reports for regulatory submissions.
  • Ability to collaborate positively with internal and external stakeholders, representing the company's interests.
