Role Overview:
The Environmental Manager will be based in Norfolk, VA, and will report directly to the Vice President of Mid Atlantic Ready Mix. This exempt position requires independent work to provide technical and engineering support regarding environmental matters across all facilities within the division.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage environmental initiatives for the division, ensuring compliance with established standards.
- Secure all necessary environmental permits for the construction and operation of assigned facilities, negotiating permit conditions to minimize operational burdens.
- Develop and implement an environmental management program to regularly assess compliance at assigned facilities, effectively communicating non-compliance issues to management and tracking corrective actions.
- Address compliance inquiries and complaints, serving as the liaison between regulatory agencies and facility operations.
- Assist in planning and provide engineering support for modifications to existing facilities or the construction of new ones to meet environmental and land use regulations.
- Establish and communicate compliance requirements, ensuring environmental monitoring, reporting, and record-keeping are maintained.
- Conduct training for company employees on relevant environmental regulations and policies.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local environmental laws, advising management on changes and their implications for the business.
- Research and implement environmental improvement programs to enhance performance.
- Travel to various locations within the division for inspections, audits, or environmental research as necessary.
- Engage in trade association committees to enhance knowledge of environmental issues and proactively address regulatory changes.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in a heavy industrial environment, including 5-7 years in a management role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong knowledge of air quality and water standards, monitoring, and reporting.
- Proven experience in managing environmental programs with a solid understanding of federal, state, and local regulations.
Additional Skills:
- Ability to comprehend technical, regulatory, and external issues related to environmental programs.
- Skill in interacting positively with regulatory agencies to clarify requirements and achieve compliance.
- Experience in auditing and inspecting industrial operations, identifying compliance issues, and effectively communicating findings.
- Capability to develop and implement effective environmental compliance strategies and management systems.
- Strong communication skills for conveying compliance activities to plant employees.
- Experience in preparing environmental permit applications and reports for submission to regulatory bodies.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, representing the company's interests.
