Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Substation Engineer to join our team at NV5. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for leading the design and delivery of substation projects, ensuring high-quality results and exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and delivery of substation projects, including preparation of construction drawings, documents, calculations, and studies.
  • Responsible for technical delivery of power delivery engineering projects or tasks, applying engineering design principles and practices.
  • Prepare calculations, studies, and reports for substation and power systems projects, meeting internal and client standards and requirements.
  • Work with small project teams to execute substation projects, ensuring timely completion and high-quality results.
  • Coordinate project information and status with client contacts, providing weekly updates on milestone progress and estimated completion dates.
  • Prepare budgetary estimates for proposals, ensuring accurate and competitive pricing.
Requirements
  • Three to ten years of experience in the Substation/Power Delivery field, with a strong understanding of electrical systems and substation design.
  • Ability to interpret and apply standards, including IEEE, IEC, NESC, and client standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to work and communicate effectively with team members, clients, and management teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize work and manage multiple assignments under budget and time constraints.
  • Demonstrated technical writing and reporting skills, with proficiency in MS Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with power system calculations, including AC panel sizing, DC panel and battery sizing, voltage drop, and cable sizing.
  • High voltage substation design experience, including preparation of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of substation physical equipment, protection and controls design, and experience with high voltage substation design activities.
  • Proficiency with SKM, CAPE, or Aspen, and experience with SCADA applications, renewables, storage, and microgrids.
Education and Certifications
  • Degree Required: 4-year ABET-accredited BSEE or equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer (licensed in at least one state, with ability to get licensed in Arizona upon hire, NCEES record holder preferred).
