Position Overview

The Spirit Wings & Spirit Direct Pilot Pathway initiatives provide a streamlined route for pilots enrolled in our partnered flight schools or university programs to ascend to the role of First Officer with Spirit Airlines.

During their tenure in the program, cadets will benefit from:

  • Expert mentorship and training from seasoned members of the Flight Operations team throughout their educational journey.
  • A comprehensive Spirit Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) equipped with early access to essential training resources in preparation for new hire training on the Airbus A320 series aircraft.
  • Provision of Foreflight & Jeppesen Pro subscriptions to enhance flight planning and navigation.
  • Invitations to exclusive "Spirit Day" events annually, featuring presentations, training opportunities, and networking with Flight Operations leadership.
Eligibility Criteria

For Part 61 & 141 Flight Schools:

  • A minimum of 500 hours of total flight time.
  • Possession of a Commercial Pilot Certificate.
  • A recommendation from faculty or the chief instructor at the partner school.
  • A current FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
  • An FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit.
  • A valid passport or documents with at least nine (9) months of validity, allowing travel in and out of the USA and all destinations served by Spirit Airlines.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

For University Programs:

  • Completion of the sophomore year in an accredited aviation degree program.
  • A recommendation from faculty or the chief instructor at the partner university.
  • A current FAA First Class Medical Certificate or the ability to obtain one prior to ATP/CTP and Jet Transition courses.
  • An FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit.
  • A valid passport or documents with at least nine (9) months of validity, allowing travel in and out of the USA and all destinations served by Spirit Airlines.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Selected candidates must fulfill all program requirements and meet FAA standards for an Unrestricted ATP or Restricted ATP (if in the university program) and undergo a final program evaluation. All cadets are required to participate in ATP/CTP and a Spirit-specific A320 Jet Transition course before being assigned a new hire class date. Once a new hire class date is available, cadets will undergo pre-employment testing and background checks prior to being assigned to a new hire pilot class.

Responsibilities as a First Officer

  • Ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all Spirit guests.
  • Assist the captain in operating the aircraft in compliance with all Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company policies.
  • Exhibit a commitment to customer service and a fresh perspective on the airline industry.
  • May undertake additional responsibilities as assigned, with duties subject to change based on circumstances (e.g., emergencies, workload fluctuations, or technical developments).
