Role Overview

The Spirit Wings & Spirit Direct Pilot Pathway initiatives provide a streamlined route for aspiring aviators enrolled in select flight training institutions or university partnerships to ascend to the role of First Officer with Spirit Airlines.

During their tenure in the program, cadets will benefit from:

  • Expert mentorship and training opportunities from seasoned Flight Operations personnel throughout their educational journey.
  • A comprehensive Spirit Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) equipped with early access to essential training resources for preparation ahead of new hire training on the Airbus A320 series.
  • Provision of Foreflight & Jeppesen Pro subscriptions to enhance navigational skills.
  • Invitations to annual "Spirit Day" events featuring presentations, specialized training opportunities, and interactions with Flight Operations leadership.
Eligibility Criteria

Flight School Requirements (Part 61 & 141):

  • A minimum of 500 hours of flight time.
  • Possession of a Commercial Pilot Certificate.
  • A recommendation from faculty or chief instructor at the partner institution.
  • A valid FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
  • FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit.
  • A valid passport with at least nine (9) months of validity for international travel.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

University Requirements:

  • Completion of the sophomore year in an accredited aviation degree program.
  • A recommendation from faculty or chief instructor at the partner institution.
  • A valid FAA First Class Medical Certificate or the ability to obtain one prior to ATP/CTP and Jet Transition courses.
  • FCC Radio Telephone Operator Permit.
  • A valid passport with at least nine (9) months of validity for international travel.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Selected candidates must fulfill all program requirements and comply with FAA standards for an Unrestricted ATP or Restricted ATP (if enrolled in the university program) and undergo a final program evaluation. All cadets are required to attend ATP/CTP and a Spirit Specific A320 Jet Transition course before being assigned a new hire class date. Once a new hire class date is set, cadets will undergo pre-employment assessments and background checks prior to their assignment.

First Officer Responsibilities

  • Ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all Spirit passengers.
  • Assist the captain in operating the aircraft in compliance with all Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and company protocols.
  • Exhibit a commitment to customer service and a fresh perspective on the airline industry.
  • May undertake additional responsibilities as required, which may vary based on situational demands (e.g., emergencies, workload fluctuations, or technical advancements).
