Job Summary

AARP is seeking a highly motivated and analytical individual to join our Government Affairs Livable Communities Team as a Government Affairs Intern. This paid internship provides an opportunity to work on real-world projects, develop your skills, and contribute to AARP's mission to empower people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age.

Key Responsibilities
  • Policy Analysis and Development: Apply strategic, analytical, and creative thinking to help promote policy issues related to housing, transportation, utilities, and high-speed internet.
  • Regulatory and Legislative Analysis: Assist with regulatory, legislative, and other public policy-related analysis and writing as directed by subject matter experts.
  • Advocacy Strategies: Support the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to advance AARP's Livable Communities public policy agenda.
  • Policy Tracking and Reporting: Assist with tracking and reporting of rulemaking, legislative decisions, hearings, meetings, and other policy-making activities.
  • Research and Document Preparation: Research policy issues, draft documents to support AARP's advocacy efforts, participate in team meetings and strategy discussions, collaborate on advocacy tactics, and support various remote and in-person events.
Qualifications
  • Education: Preference for law school or graduate student enrolled in a Master of Public Administration or Public Policy program.
  • Academic Status: Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university, rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship, or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program.
  • Skills and Abilities: Must be a self-starter and adaptable to work under tight deadlines. Ability to manage multiple projects, anticipate project needs, and discern work priorities. Ability to work well with diverse populations, including gender, race, and sexual orientation. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Familiarity with creating presentation decks and knowledge of multiple social media platforms is a plus.
Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly range is $18 for undergraduates, $21 for graduate students, and $28 for Ph.D. candidates. Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
