About the Role

The Cato Institute is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented State Government Affairs Associate to join its Government Affairs team. As a key member of the team, you will work closely with the Director of State Relations to establish the Cato Institute as a primary source for objective analysis and free-market policy options for state policymakers and their staffs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor State Policy Trends: Stay up-to-date on the latest state policy debates and identify opportunities for Cato research projects and scholars to have maximum impact.
  • Develop Initiatives: Assist in developing specific initiatives around select issues to proactively influence state policy debates.
  • Support the Director of State Relations: Provide administrative support, including scheduling, record-keeping, and travel coordination.
  • Track Legislation and State Relations: Monitor legislation and state relations efforts on targeted issues.
  • Develop Policy Understanding: Gain a deep understanding of Cato's policy approaches and strategies.
  • Engage with State-Based Policy Engagements: Work independently on state-based policy engagements with legislative and executive-level staff.
  • Coordinate with the Cato Federal Affairs Team: Assist with coordination with the Cato Federal Affairs team.
  • Meet with Research Assistants: Regularly meet with research assistants to discuss research project schedules.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree: A degree in Political Science, Economics, History, or a similar field.
  • Work Experience: 1 to 3 years of work or internship experience with state or local government, an association representing state legislators, or other state-level policy group; or equivalent experience at a national-level non-profit entity such as an association, think tank, or government agency.
  • Libertarian Philosophy: Working knowledge of libertarian philosophy and free market principles.
  • Outreach Style: Strategic, innovative, and creative outreach style.
  • Passion for State Government: A passion for state and local government and its impacts on the lives of citizens.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate complex concepts in concise written form.
