The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) stands as the foremost advocate for cannabis consumers in the United States, serving as a vigilant overseer dedicated to safeguarding individual liberties and promoting responsible cannabis consumption for over fifty years. As the landscape of cannabis legalization evolves across various states, NORML's mission is adapting to tackle emerging challenges, including consumer protection, industry oversight, social equity, and environmental sustainability.

POSITION OVERVIEW

NORML's Board of Directors is in search of a visionary and proactive Chief Executive Officer to steer our national organization based in Washington, D.C., which encompasses numerous active chapters across the United States and nine additional countries. NORML also engages in advocacy through an affiliated Political Action Committee, Legal Committee, and a 501(c)(3) Foundation. The Chief Executive Officer will be accountable for the financial stability and operational effectiveness of the organization, ensuring NORML's standing as a reliable source of accurate cannabis-related information. The incoming CEO will collaborate closely with the Board to enhance NORML's financial strategies, spearheading fundraising initiatives and optimizing advocacy resources through strategic budgeting and planning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chief Executive Officer's primary responsibilities include fundraising and overseeing daily operations with staff. The ideal candidate will also showcase their capability to elevate NORML's significance to cannabis consumers amidst a rapidly evolving cultural and political environment. The CEO will work in close partnership with NORML's Board of Directors to guide and manage fundraising activities and will play a pivotal role in advocating for legislative reforms concerning federal and state marijuana policies. The CEO will represent NORML in various media outlets, legislative testimonies, and at conferences, conventions, and other significant events.

The Chief Executive Officer will supervise NORML's social media initiatives and provide strategic advice to enhance our online presence while ensuring compliance with the legal requirements applicable to 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Additionally, the CEO will cultivate alliances and strategic partnerships with other advocacy groups focused on drug policy reform.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess a successful track record in fundraising and organizational leadership. Key qualifications include:

● A profound understanding of the history of cannabis prohibition, political dynamics, and current policies both domestically and internationally. The CEO should be adept at engaging with a diverse range of cannabis consumers, comprehending their needs, values, and cultural contexts.

● Demonstrated leadership experience within nonprofit and volunteer organizations, including effective staff management. The next CEO will have a proven history of successful organizational development, budgeting, and fundraising.

● Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with experience in public policy advocacy, public relations, and grant writing. The CEO must possess a strong command of social media and experience in planning and executing public events and campaigns.

EXPERIENCE

Qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate a successful history in fundraising and organizational leadership. The ideal applicant should hold a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent, with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in nonprofit or public policy sectors. A background in cannabis or drug policy advocacy is highly desirable.

COMPENSATION

The compensation package includes a base salary ranging from $100,000 to $115,000 per year, commensurate with experience, along with benefits and performance-based incentive bonuses.
