Position Overview:
As a key member of the surgical team, the Surgical Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) plays a vital role in enhancing patient outcomes during surgical interventions. This position operates under the guidance of the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room and collaborates closely with the surgical physician team, adhering to established protocols and best practices.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Deliver compassionate and respectful care tailored to the unique needs of each patient, ensuring high levels of patient satisfaction.
  • Uphold the patient's autonomy in making informed decisions regarding their medical treatment.
  • Assess and identify clinical competencies pertinent to the RNFA role.
  • Work alongside Nurse Managers to evaluate and enhance service delivery based on identified needs.
  • Act as a patient advocate, ensuring that patient-centered care remains at the forefront of decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in performance and service delivery.
  • Contribute to cost-effective practices through the efficient use of resources.
  • Understand the operational aspects of the healthcare system and their impact on overall success.
  • Foster teamwork by sharing knowledge, collaboratively solving challenges, and assisting colleagues as needed.
  • Exhibit flexibility in handling unexpected assignments and participate actively in departmental meetings and committees.
  • Engage in preoperative patient management in partnership with other healthcare professionals.
  • Conduct thorough preoperative assessments of patients.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team regarding patient care plans.
  • Perform surgical first assistant techniques, including instrument handling, tissue management, and wound care, while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Maintain and enhance personal nursing skills and knowledge.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient conditions or emergencies.
  • Utilize sound judgment and critical thinking in clinical decision-making.
  • Ensure adherence to safety practices, particularly concerning sharps and protective equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
  • Current RN or APN license in New Jersey.
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program.
  • A minimum of three years of perioperative nursing experience.
  • Certification as a CNOR.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • RNFA certification (RNFAC) with successful completion of the required clinical hours.
  • Strong organizational, professional, and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with the healthcare team.
