Overview

The Surgical Services Transport Assistant plays a crucial role within the Perioperative Service team, operating under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN). This position is essential for the safe transportation of patients from their rooms to surgical areas, as well as facilitating movement within the surgical services department and the broader hospital environment. The role encompasses responsibilities such as maintaining cleanliness and readiness of operating rooms, running essential errands, and providing basic support for patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure accurate identification of patients and facilitate safe transport to and from the operating room, holding areas, or post-anesthesia care.
  • Assist in the efficient turnover of operating room suites.
  • Support the positioning, lifting, and transferring of patients as directed by medical staff.
  • Aid in the setup of cases for assigned operating rooms.
  • Maintain cleanliness in designated supply areas, adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Clean and maintain designated equipment in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Contribute to the upkeep of the surgical area to ensure a safe, clean, and organized environment.
  • Perform between-case clean-up of anesthesia equipment and manage changing circuits and tubing.
  • Communicate effectively with Sterile Processing to procure necessary supplies.
  • Gather required equipment, supplies, and positioning aids for surgical cases.
  • Restock sterile supplies in operating room storage areas as needed.
  • Return cleaned equipment to the designated storage area.
  • Monitor and stock solutions, ensuring proper inventory rotation.
  • Order and maintain adequate levels of anesthesia supplies and equipment.
  • Complete tasks efficiently and utilize time management skills effectively.
  • Report any equipment issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of autoclave equipment.
  • Stock anesthesia carts and closets as directed.
  • Conduct BI tests and temperature checks for operating rooms and refrigeration units.
  • Provide compassionate and respectful care tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Uphold the patient's right to make informed decisions regarding their medical care.
  • Exhibit knowledge of patient growth, development, and health considerations across the lifespan.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital setting with operating room exposure is preferred.
  • BLS certification is mandatory.
  • Ability to comprehend the operation of various equipment and machinery, with the capacity to work independently. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration with healthcare team members.
