Overview

The Surgical Services Transport Specialist plays a crucial role within the Perioperative Service team, operating under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse (RN). This position is essential for the safe and efficient transportation of patients from their rooms to surgical areas, as well as between different sections of the surgical services department and the hospital. Responsibilities also include assisting with general cleaning and room turnover, running errands, conveying messages, and providing basic patient care support.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure accurate identification of patients and facilitate safe transport to and from the operating room, holding area, or post-anesthesia care unit.
  • Assist in the turnover of operating room suites.
  • Support the positioning, lifting, and transferring of patients as instructed.
  • Aid in the setup of cases for assigned operating rooms.
  • Maintain cleanliness in designated supply areas while adhering to Infection Control and departmental protocols.
  • Clean and maintain designated equipment in assigned areas according to established guidelines.
  • Contribute to the overall upkeep of the area to ensure a safe, clean, and organized environment.
  • Perform between-case clean-up of anesthesia equipment and manage the changing of circuits and tubing.
  • Communicate with Sterile Processing to acquire necessary supplies as required.
  • Gather essential equipment, supplies, and positioning aids for surgical cases.
  • Restock sterile supplies in operating room storage areas and rooms as necessary.
  • Return cleaned equipment to the designated storage area.
  • Monitor and stock solutions, ensuring proper inventory rotation.
  • Order and maintain sufficient par levels for all anesthesia supplies and equipment.
  • Complete tasks in a timely manner while utilizing time efficiently.
  • Report any equipment issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Autoclave equipment.
  • Stock anesthesia carts and closets as directed.
  • Conduct BI test/A test as required.
  • Transport specimens, equipment, or supplies using safe techniques.
  • Retrieve blood from the Blood Bank as needed.
  • Perform and document temperature and humidity checks for operating rooms, as well as temperature checks for refrigerators/freezers.
  • Provide considerate and respectful care that focuses on the individual needs of patients.
  • Uphold the patient's right to make decisions regarding their medical care, including the option to discontinue treatment, as permitted by law. Demonstrate an understanding of the varying levels of care required based on the age of the patients served.
  • Exhibit knowledge of growth, development, and/or adult health throughout the lifespan as relevant to the role.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • One year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital setting with operating room experience is preferred.
  • BLS certification is mandatory.
  • Ability to comprehend the operation of various equipment and machinery, with the capability to function independently. Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration with all members of the healthcare team.
