Overview

The Operating Room Assistant (ORA) is an integral member of the Perioperative Service team, working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). This role involves the safe transportation of patients to and from surgical areas, as well as assisting in the maintenance and cleanliness of operating rooms and related spaces. The ORA also performs various tasks that support patient care and operational efficiency within the surgical department.

Responsibilities
  • Accurately identifies patients and ensures their safe transport to the operating room, recovery area, or holding area.
  • Assists in the turnover and preparation of operating room suites.
  • Aids in the positioning, lifting, and transferring of patients as instructed.
  • Supports case setup for designated surgical rooms.
  • Maintains cleanliness in supply areas while adhering to Infection Control protocols.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment as per established guidelines.
  • Contributes to the upkeep of the surgical environment to ensure it is safe, clean, and organized.
  • Performs interim cleaning of anesthesia equipment and manages changing circuits and tubing.
  • Coordinates with Sterile Processing to procure necessary supplies.
  • Gathers required equipment, supplies, and positioning aids for surgical cases.
  • Restocks sterile supplies in operating room storage areas as necessary.
  • Returns cleaned equipment to designated storage locations.
  • Monitors and replenishes solutions, ensuring proper inventory rotation.
  • Orders and maintains appropriate stock levels for anesthesia supplies and equipment.
  • Completes tasks promptly and utilizes time efficiently.
  • Reports any equipment issues to the relevant personnel.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of Autoclave equipment.
  • Stocks anesthesia carts and supply areas as directed.
  • Conducts BI test/A test as required.
  • Safely transports specimens, equipment, or supplies using appropriate techniques.
  • Retrieves blood products from the Blood Bank as needed.
  • Conducts and documents temperature and humidity checks for operating rooms and storage units.
  • Provides compassionate and respectful care tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Upholds the patient's right to make informed decisions regarding their medical care, including the option to discontinue treatment as permitted by law.
  • Exhibits knowledge of patient growth, development, and health considerations across the lifespan as relevant to the role.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital setting with operating room exposure is preferred.
  • BLS certification is mandatory.
  • Ability to comprehend the operation of various equipment and machinery, with the capability to function independently. Strong professional, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration with the healthcare team.
