Job Overview

As a Horizontal Construction Engineer in the Army National Guard, you will play a crucial role in preparing construction sites by removing obstacles and ensuring a smooth workflow. Your expertise in operating heavy machinery will be essential for the success of your team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate bulldozers, road graders, and other large equipment to clear construction sites.
  • Level ground for runways and roadbeds, ensuring precise measurements and alignment.
  • Excavate and dig areas designated for construction, preparing them for further development.
  • Transport heavy construction equipment using tractor-trailers.
  • Assist in moving substantial building materials with cranes.
  • Support combat engineer missions as required.

Skills Acquired
  • Maintenance and repair techniques for heavy machinery.
  • Understanding of soil types and the placement of grade stakes.

  • Enjoyment of outdoor work environments.


Through rigorous training, you will gain valuable skills and experience that can transition into a civilian career in construction and engineering, particularly in operating heavy machinery. You may also have the opportunity to earn specialized certifications that enhance your employability in the construction sector.

Compensation and Training
Instead of incurring costs for training, you will receive a regular paycheck while learning essential job skills. The training program includes nine weeks of Basic Training to develop foundational soldiering skills, followed by nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training, combining classroom instruction with practical field experience.
