Program Background: The Access to Counsel in Evictions (ACE) initiative, launched recently, ensures that low-income tenants receive legal representation in eviction and subsidy termination cases. This program is part of a broader movement aimed at achieving housing stability and preventing displacement, thereby upholding the dignity of renters through legal support.

Eviction remains a significant issue, with a high volume of cases filed annually. The ACE initiative is designed to address the urgent need for legal representation, particularly for vulnerable populations. The Legal Aid Bureau's Tenants' Right to Counsel Project (TRCP) is at the forefront of this effort, working diligently to ensure that the right to counsel is accessible in every eviction case. The TRCP team, consisting of dedicated professionals, has made substantial progress in representing households in need. To enhance the visibility and effectiveness of the ACE initiative, TRCP is committed to strategic community outreach that not only informs but also transforms the narrative surrounding housing court.

Position Summary: The Legal Aid Bureau is seeking a detail-oriented, collaborative, and innovative individual to serve as the TRCP Community Engagement Coordinator. This role will focus on leading targeted outreach efforts for the implementation of the ACE initiative. The Coordinator will collaborate closely with various directors and attorneys to develop and execute strategic outreach plans that are informed by data and driven by relationships.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will actively engage with tenant organizations, community institutions, service providers, and grassroots partners to cultivate strategic alliances and foster collaborations centered on tenants' rights and the ACE initiative. This position will also involve analyzing internal and external data to identify outreach targets and develop impactful strategies. Frequent collaboration with LAB colleagues will be essential for coordinated outreach efforts, effective messaging, and media opportunities. Depending on the needs of the team, the Coordinator may also undertake paralegal responsibilities related to outreach.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and nurture relationships with stakeholders to support outreach objectives; enhance collaborations among tenant organizations, grassroots entities, service providers, and community institutions.
  • Plan and implement outreach, training, and media initiatives in partnership with community leaders focused on housing stability.
  • Identify trends and issues affecting community members, collaborating with LAB staff and external partners to develop responsive strategies.
  • Actively participate in community-based and tenant-led meetings and initiatives.
  • Contribute to programmatic reporting, providing both quantitative and qualitative data for evaluating outreach strategies.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Experience applying race equity analysis.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Background in grassroots organizing, community outreach, housing policy, or related fields.
  • Creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain diverse relationships.
  • Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Strong listening, negotiation, and teamwork skills.
  • Experience managing independent projects.
  • Diverse social and cultural experiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in a language other than English.
  • Experience in the non-profit legal services sector.
  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management software or geospatial analysis tools.
Work Environment:

Work responsibilities are typically carried out in an office setting with regular communication through various channels, including video conferencing and email. Some duties may occur in community settings.

Benefits:

The Community Engagement Coordinator will receive compensation in accordance with LAB's salary scale, which is subject to annual revisions. Relevant professional experience will be considered in salary determination.
