Position Overview

Role Summary: The Senior Environmental Policy Advocate is instrumental in spearheading initiatives aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Maine's waterways and the diverse ecosystems that define its natural landscape. This position encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including legislative advocacy, media engagement, and collaboration with partner organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and assess policies, legislation, and administrative actions affecting Maine's natural resources, focusing on critical areas such as aquatic ecosystems, habitat preservation, and water quality.
  • Conduct thorough policy research and develop supporting materials for advocacy efforts, including memos and testimonies.
  • Present written and oral testimonies to legislative committees and other governing bodies to advance the goals of the Forests, Waters, & Wildlife Program.
  • Represent the organization in various forums, including regulatory agencies and environmental commissions, to advocate for the conservation of Maine's forests and aquatic resources.
  • Engage in coalitions and working groups to address strategic issues requiring technical analysis and policy development.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including community leaders and organizations, to support conservation initiatives.
  • Deliver presentations and participate in events to promote awareness of environmental issues related to forests, waters, and wildlife.
  • Collaborate with the program director to create annual operational plans and budgets.
  • Provide policy analysis and research support to other organizational projects as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., environmental science, natural resource management) or a law degree.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in natural resource policy or environmental advocacy.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including proficiency in persuasive writing and public speaking.
  • Ability to engage effectively with diverse groups, including non-profits, technical experts, and policymakers.
  • Capacity to quickly grasp and articulate complex policy issues to various audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental conservation in Maine.
