About This Role

We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic individual to become a vital part of our Private Sector Housing Team within the Thriving Communities Directorate. This position is a full-time role, requiring 37 hours of work each week, and is offered on a temporary basis until March 2026.

The successful candidate will engage in a comprehensive range of responsibilities managed by the team, with a primary focus on Barrow's designated Housing Market Renewal area. Additionally, there will be an expectation to assist colleagues in addressing housing standards across the Council's jurisdiction and to undertake necessary enforcement actions as service demands dictate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regulation of Houses in Multiple Occupation.

Experience in an enforcement capacity within a local authority setting is preferred, along with qualifications in environmental protection, housing, building, construction, or surveying. However, we prioritize finding the right candidate who embodies the qualities we seek, and training will be provided as necessary.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team member capable of managing their own workload while delivering exceptional customer service. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is proficiency in IT. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle would be advantageous for conducting visits and attending meetings.

You will be part of a flexible and responsive Housing Team, working collaboratively to achieve our objectives.

Essential Requirements:

The ability to communicate effectively with customers and provide clear advice and guidance in accurate spoken English is crucial.

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive training and development opportunities.
  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Options to enhance your pension through Shared Cost Additional Voluntary Contributions.
  • Various perks and discount schemes, including savings on phone contracts and local gym memberships.
  • Competitive salary.
  • A 12-month digital trial allowing free workplace car parking for employees in all Council-owned car parks during weekdays.

Application and Interview Process:

We are currently offering both in-person and virtual interviews, with options to be discussed with candidates upon invitation to the interview stage. If a virtual interview is preferred, it will typically be conducted via Microsoft Teams, which is accessible for new users. Alternative arrangements can be discussed if there are any issues with accessing this technology.

Commitment to Safeguarding:

At The Cumbria County Council, we are dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. We expect all employees, volunteers, and the Externally Provided Workforce to share this commitment.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion:

We are committed to enhancing the diversity of our workforce to better reflect the communities we serve. We welcome applications from all individuals and strive to foster an inclusive and supportive culture that values and celebrates our differences.
