  • Perform inspections and reviews to ensure adherence to applicable codes, standards, and City ordinances concerning the storage, handling, and utilization of hazardous materials.
  • Assess computer modeling included in plans submissions to validate code compliance or equivalency and/or performance-based code design.
  • Engage in preliminary design discussions with design professionals regarding technically complex building projects to determine required fire protection systems and features and explore acceptable design alternatives.
  • Coordinate code interpretation and application with other City departments and agencies, including the City's Development Services Department.
  • If selected for this position and meeting the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may be required to travel to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of NFPA 409 and NFPA 415.
  • Experience in the design and/or review of airport terminals, hangars, ramps, or taxiways.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the field of Fire Protection Engineering or the ability to obtain licensure within six months of employment.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple work locations.
Essential Duties and Functions
Responsibilities may include:
  • Approving, processing, and sealing plans, specifications, and construction documents by applying engineering standards and principles for complex calculations relevant to the discipline within Local and State regulatory frameworks.
  • Managing routine engineering projects or programs that require technical proficiency, coordination, and administrative oversight.
  • Identifying, assessing, and recommending improvements for preliminary and final designs and design criteria for assigned programs or projects.
  • Assisting in the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans, schedules, estimates, budgets, detailed final plans, specifications, special conditions, and agreements.
  • Providing technical assistance throughout project progress from design to completion.
  • Developing cost estimates, tracking expenditures, and preparing engineering and feasibility reports and studies for projects.
  • Reviewing plans and approving permits in accordance with engineering standards and principles relevant to the discipline within Local and State regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting field inspections of contractor work to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Researching and performing statistical analyses for validation of reports and dissemination of results in various communication formats.
  • Developing standard policies and ordinances for various contracts and/or projects and operational procedures.
