Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Protection and Control Engineer will deliver engineering services focused on system safeguarding and control under limited oversight. This role will effectively manage tasks in a secure, regulatory compliant, timely, and cost-efficient manner. The position requires a high level of technical proficiency while fostering skills and knowledge in associated technical domains. Responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks where the quality of work will be subject to limited review by Senior or Principal Engineers. Typical responsibilities include conducting short-circuit and coordination studies, setting protective relay configurations, designing protection and control systems including one-line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams, as well as performing power system modeling using platforms like ASPEN OneLiner and analyzing power system disturbances for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare reports and work plans, recommending actions based on both short-term and long-term objectives along with economic considerations.
  • Develop and coordinate project-specific work plans, managing them through to completion while making necessary adjustments.
  • Act as a technical representative in meetings with clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Guide and direct other engineers and contractors on assigned projects.
  • Oversee multiple projects while mentoring and developing junior engineers and staff.
  • Complete estimates for costs, work orders, and schedules.
  • Analyze data to provide recommendations and make informed decisions.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including drawings, files, and databases.
  • Offer engineering support to clients and internal teams.
  • Contribute to the development of corporate standards and specifications relevant to the area of expertise.
  • Exhibit a strong understanding of sound engineering practices and standards.
  • Analyze system disturbances to ensure proper functioning of protection schemes and assist in root cause investigations.
  • Explore all technical aspects of protective relaying and controls to integrate innovative ideas or technologies that enhance procedures and outcomes.
  • Provide insights on protective relay schemes to assist in determining the layout and positioning of substation facilities.
  • Develop and utilize digital software for power quality assessments, fault studies, system coordination evaluations, relay software, event analysis, protection asset databases, and arc flash studies.
  • Create detailed schematics for relaying single lines, secondary protective relay configurations, and low voltage equipment connections for generation, transmission, and distribution protection.
  • Design and oversee the installation of upgrades and replacements for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities.
  • Establish cabling requirements for relay cabinets, equipment, and relay panels.
  • Prepare layout drawings for control houses and battery buildings.
  • Draft bidding documents for customer system protection equipment for industrial, distribution, and transmission substations.
  • Generate protective relay settings for new facilities and modify existing settings to optimize system protection.
  • Perform subject matter expert tasks on assigned NERC and/or CIP Compliance standards.
  • Prepare specifications for construction, equipment, materials, and work scope.
  • Evaluate bids from customers and recommend suppliers or contractors for system protection projects.
  • Manage contracts with equipment suppliers and monitor progress to ensure adherence to schedules.
  • Coordinate and supervise field testing and modifications of substation and industrial control systems, including phasing tests and other commissioning activities.
  • Develop procedures for protection system switching.
  • Oversee contractors or staff on project-related tasks, certifying completed work and recommending final project acceptance.
  • Monitor project progress during construction and suggest modifications to ensure project success.
  • Perform project management duties for various projects simultaneously and assist colleagues with their assignments.
  • Ensure all work is conducted safely and efficiently.
