POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Protection and Control Engineer will deliver engineering services focused on system safeguarding and control, operating with minimal oversight. This role entails managing tasks efficiently while adhering to safety, regulatory, and budgetary guidelines. The Engineer will showcase technical proficiency while enhancing skills in related engineering domains. Responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks, where the quality of work will undergo limited scrutiny by Senior or Principal Engineers. Key services include conducting short-circuit and coordination analyses, configuring protective relay settings, and designing protection and control systems, including one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams. Proficiency in power system modeling using platforms like ASPEN OneLiner and conducting power system disturbance evaluations for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial settings is essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Generate reports and project plans, offering recommendations based on both short-term and long-term objectives alongside economic considerations.
  • Coordinate individual project work plans and oversee their execution, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Act as a technical liaison in discussions with clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Guide and direct other engineers and contractors on assigned projects.
  • Manage multiple projects while mentoring and developing junior engineers and staff.
  • Prepare estimates related to costs, work orders, and schedules.
  • Analyze data to provide informed recommendations and decisions.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including drawings, files, and databases.
  • Offer engineering support to clients and internal teams.
  • Contribute to the development of corporate standards and specifications within the area of expertise.
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of sound engineering practices and industry standards.
  • Analyze system disturbances to ensure the proper functioning of protection schemes and assist in root cause investigations.
  • Explore all technical aspects of protective relaying and controls to implement innovative ideas or technologies that enhance procedures and outcomes.
  • Provide insights on protective relay schemes to assist in the arrangement and placement of substation facilities.
  • Utilize digital tools for power quality assessments, fault analysis, system coordination studies, and relay event evaluations.
  • Create detailed schematics for relaying, secondary protective relay schemes, and control system connections for various facilities.
  • Design and oversee the installation of upgrades and replacements for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial facilities.
  • Establish cabling requirements for relay cabinets and equipment.
  • Prepare layout drawings for control houses and battery storage.
  • Draft bidding documents for system protection equipment for various substations.
  • Develop protective relay settings for new and existing facilities to ensure optimal system protection.
  • Engage in subject matter expert tasks related to NERC and/or CIP Compliance standards.
  • Prepare specifications for construction, equipment, and materials.
  • Evaluate supplier bids and recommend contractors for system protection projects.
  • Manage contracts with equipment suppliers, ensuring progress aligns with project timelines.
  • Oversee field testing and modifications for substation and industrial control systems, coordinating with contractors and internal departments.
  • Develop procedures for protection system switching.
  • Coordinate project-related work, ensuring certification of completed tasks and final project acceptance.
  • Monitor construction activities and suggest modifications to ensure project success.
  • Execute project management responsibilities for various projects concurrently and assist colleagues with their initiatives.
