POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Protection and Control Engineer will deliver engineering services focused on system protection and control with minimal oversight. This role will effectively oversee projects ensuring compliance with safety regulations, timeliness, and budget constraints. The engineer will exhibit a high level of technical skill while also expanding their knowledge in related engineering fields. Responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks that will undergo limited verification by senior engineering staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Generate comprehensive reports and strategic work plans, offering recommendations based on both short-term and long-term objectives as well as budgetary considerations.
  • Develop and manage individual project work plans, ensuring completion while adapting to changing circumstances.
  • Act as a technical liaison in meetings with clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Guide and direct other engineers and contractors on assigned projects.
  • Handle multiple projects while mentoring junior engineers and support staff.
  • Prepare detailed estimates, including costs, work orders, and schedules.
  • Analyze technical data to inform decisions and recommendations.
  • Maintain organized technical documentation, including drawings and databases.
  • Provide engineering support to both clients and internal teams.
  • Contribute to the development of corporate standards and specifications relevant to the area of expertise.
  • Exhibit a solid understanding of sound engineering practices and industry standards.
  • Conduct analyses of system disturbances to ensure the proper functioning of protection schemes and assist in identifying root causes.
  • Explore all technical aspects of protective relaying and controls to integrate innovative ideas or technologies that enhance operational procedures and outcomes.
  • Offer insights on protective relay schemes to aid in the design and layout of substation facilities.
  • Utilize digital tools for various analyses, including power quality assessments, fault studies, and coordination evaluations.
  • Create detailed schematics for protective relay systems and low voltage equipment connections.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of upgrades and replacements for generation, transmission, and distribution facilities.
  • Establish cabling specifications for relay cabinets and associated equipment.
  • Draft layout plans for control houses and battery storage facilities.
  • Prepare bidding documents for system protection equipment in various settings.
  • Develop and adjust protective relay settings for new and existing facilities to optimize system protection.
  • Engage in subject matter expert tasks related to NERC and/or CIP Compliance standards.
  • Draft specifications for construction, equipment, and materials, along with detailed work scopes.
  • Evaluate supplier bids and recommend contractors for system protection projects.
  • Manage contracts with equipment suppliers, ensuring timely progress to meet project timelines.
  • Coordinate field testing and modifications for substation and industrial control systems, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
  • Formulate procedures for protection system switching.
  • Oversee project-related work, including certification of completed tasks and final project acceptance recommendations.
  • Monitor project progress during construction and suggest necessary modifications to ensure success.
  • Perform project management tasks for various projects concurrently and assist colleagues with their engineering tasks.
  • Execute all responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner.
