Position Summary:
The Healthcare Support Specialist plays a crucial role within the patient care team.

Under the supervision of the Practice Manager, the Specialist carries out specific clinical responsibilities and aids the Providers to ensure that each patient receives prompt and effective care.

The Specialist upholds strict patient confidentiality at all times and may also undertake general clerical or administrative tasks as required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Clinical responsibilities performed under the guidance of the provider:
Welcome patients to the practice and guide them to the examination room. If the patient is new, perform introductions.
Interview patients to confirm the reason for their visit, gather medical history, and measure vital signs, height, and weight. For same-day acute visits, obtain temperature and pulse oximetry.
Document all patient information collected in the Electronic Health Record in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Confirm and record allergies, current medications, their strength and frequency, necessary refills, and preferred pharmacy.
Ensure that all documentation, results, and reports relevant to the visit are accessible to the provider for discussion with the patient.
Assist the provider during patient examinations and procedures as instructed.
Perform phlebotomy, collect blood and other specimens, label them appropriately, and prepare for lab delivery. Document these procedures in the EHR.
Conduct routine in-office laboratory tests and record the results in the EHR.
Perform routine or diagnostic tests such as EKG and spirometry, providing reports to the provider for evaluation.
Prepare treatment rooms, ensuring they are clean and adequately stocked.
Clean and sterilize instruments, and dispose of contaminated materials properly.
Manage patient communications (telephone encounters) as delegated by licensed clinical staff/provider.
Prepare prescription refill documents for provider review and signature.
Maintain efficient and organized systems to ensure timely workflow for patients and providers. Notify reception staff of any expected service delays.
Verify that the medical record number is included in the patient's demographic information. Obtain and enter the MRN from the Results system if necessary.
Schedule patient appointments.
Prepare patient referrals and authorizations for specialist and hospital services.
Assist with the review and preparation of Home Healthcare Certifications and other documents (lab orders, diagnostics, etc.) as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Medical Assisting Certification
Knowledge of medical terminology and medications
Excellent customer service and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
1 year of experience working with electronic health records
1 year of experience in an office-based physician practice
