Overview

The Nutritional Services Associate plays a vital role in facilitating communication between the nursing departments and the Food Service Division regarding patient meal preferences, dietary modifications, and overall patient support. This position involves reading patient menus to individuals twice daily, adjusting selections to comply with dietary restrictions, and efficiently managing diet orders. The associate is responsible for compiling special requests and ensuring familiarity with dietary limitations to provide optimal patient care and satisfaction. Promptly addressing any changes is essential for maintaining operational efficiency. Responsibilities also include assembling meal trays and delivering them to patient rooms and nursing units, as well as occasionally preparing salads, desserts, beverages, and other food items as needed.

Responsibilities

Patient Care Activities

  • Assess age-specific safety considerations for adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations in relation to food.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to interpret responses from diverse age groups.
  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures regarding universal precautions and patient isolation protocols.
  • Exhibit knowledge of modified diets, appropriate condiments, and related dietary restrictions as outlined by clinical staff.
  • Correctly adjust patient menus according to dietary guidelines while respecting cultural, ethnic, and religious preferences.
  • Report any patient-related concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Perform all dietary office functions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Compile patient census data, tally menus, and calculate food quantities required for tray service.
  • Take telephone messages and relay information to the designated personnel.

Non-Patient Care Activities

  • Ensure office equipment is maintained by notifying maintenance of necessary repairs.
  • Follow sanitation procedures as mandated by the Board of Health and maintain a clean working environment.
  • Properly identify and utilize cleaning chemicals according to manufacturer recommendations and safety data sheets.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of necessary supplies to support efficient Food Service operations.
  • Comply with the medical center's dress code.

Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • Minimum of six (6) months experience in customer service or food service.
  • Demonstrated understanding of common dietary modifications.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Current BLS certification (CPR), with training provided upon hire.

PREFERRED

  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in healthcare food service or two (2) years in food service.

Work Hours: 6am-7pm
