Position Overview

As a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at UMass Amherst, you will engage in advanced research within the field of nuclear and particle physics. Your contributions will be vital in the design, simulation, and execution of experimental studies. This role encompasses the analysis of experimental findings, the preparation of scholarly articles, and the formulation of innovative physics proposals. Additionally, you will mentor graduate and undergraduate students participating in research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze data derived from experimental research.
  • Execute computational simulations to predict detector performance for experiments.
  • Draft and prepare scientific publications.
  • Create and develop new research proposals for review and submission.
  • Mentor and guide students involved in research projects.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate to promote teamwork, diversity, and inclusivity.
  • Work alongside colleagues to support strategic objectives.
  • Undertake other responsibilities that align with the mission and goals of the institution.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in experimental nuclear or particle physics is required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in ROOT analysis, C++, and Python programming languages.
  • Experience in developing neural networks for particle identification, including electrons, muons, and pions.
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic calorimeters, drift chambers, and multi-wire proportional counters.
  • Knowledge of conducting GEANT simulations to forecast detector responses and experimental outcomes.

Working Environment:

  • The position does not entail specific physical demands.
  • This is a full-time role requiring relocation.

Work Schedule:

  • Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Compensation:

  • Annual salary is set at $65,000.
