Position Summary:
Reporting directly to the AVANCE National CEO, the Executive Director for the Rio Grande Valley will hold comprehensive strategic and operational accountability for AVANCE's personnel, programs, growth, and the implementation of AVANCE, Inc.'s mission within the region.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management:
- Collaborate closely with the local advisory board and maintain regular communication with the AVANCE National CEO to ensure alignment of local programs, operations, and growth initiatives with AVANCE's mission and strategic objectives.
- Partner with the AVANCE National CEO to set annual objectives, propose timelines, and identify resources necessary to achieve strategic goals.
- Guarantee local program excellence, including thorough program evaluation, quality oversight, and management of finance, administration, fundraising, and communications.
- Actively engage and inspire local volunteers, advisory board members, event committees, alumni, partner organizations, and funders.
- Develop, maintain, and support a robust local advisory board; seek and enhance advisory board engagement in strategic direction for ongoing local operations and national expansion.
- Oversee the preparation of agendas for local advisory board meetings and subcommittees.
- Lead, mentor, develop, and retain a high-performing local senior management team.
- Establish and utilize effective systems to monitor scaling progress and regularly assess program components to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the local advisory board, funders, and other stakeholders.
- Provide oversight to a diverse and growing staff, upholding the organization's values and beliefs.
- Recruit and direct staff in accordance with AVANCE's Personnel Policies and Procedures.
- Support staff development and assist staff in leveraging their specialized skills for the benefit of the agency, while fostering a work environment that attracts, retains, and motivates top-quality talent and diversity.
- Create a healthy work atmosphere that encourages innovation, leadership development, and a culture of accountability.
- Engage with local funders and partners to increase local revenue to support existing program operations and regional growth.
- Enhance and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations—with the goal of strengthening the organization's brand.
- Utilize external presence and relationships to create new opportunities.
- Participate in local activities that will raise awareness and recognition of the organization.
- Ensure fiscal integrity, including the development of realistic and achievable strategic and annual operating plans, annual budgets, and monthly financial statements that accurately reflect the organization's financial status, along with submitting budgets and financials to the Board of Directors for review and approval.
- Engage in activities that mitigate risk and liability to the organization.
- Communicate any risk or potential liability to the National office.
- Understand and fully implement AVANCE's policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and the terms and conditions of all contracts and grants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The Executive Director for the Rio Grande Valley will be thoroughly committed to AVANCE's mission. All candidates should possess proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Specific qualifications include:
- Advanced degree, ideally a master's in business, education, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of senior management experience, including a track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or nationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff.
- Ability to provide specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have advanced an organization to the next stage of growth.
- Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation.
- Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
- Past success working with a board of directors or an advisory board, with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
- Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
- Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
- Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
- Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
- Ability to travel to various sites: Dependable transportation is required daily with a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, current auto liability insurance, and the ability to be bondable by AVANCE, Inc.
- Travel may be required up to 50% of the time for work-related site visits, meetings, and functions.
Mental and Physical Demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress; work with interruptions and deadlines; walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; occasional lifting/carrying, pulling/pushing of 10-30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Environmental Factors:
Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.). Occasional exposure to weather-related conditions when working in outside environments/neighborhoods and events.
