Overview:

Under the supervision of the RN or LPN, assists in delivering personalized care to patients, aiming to achieve their highest level of wellness. Collaborates effectively with team members, recognizing the significance of collective objectives. Executes assigned clinical tasks and non-clinical support duties essential for patient care.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts daily hygiene routines.
  • Assists with routine daily activities:
mobility support, ensuring nutritional needs are fulfilled (e.g.,

intake documentation, feeding assistance), repositioning patients, monitoring for skin integrity, and utilizing appropriate supplies for daily care.

Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Collects and documents patient information (e.g., vital signs) in EMR.

Accurately files reports and prepares charts for admissions, discharges, and transfers.

May perform point-of-care testing or specimen collection as determined by unit (e.g., glucose monitoring).

Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel.

Communicates effectively with other healthcare team members to optimize patient care.

Participates in the admission, discharge, and transfer processes for patients and their belongings.

Demonstrates appropriate stewardship of resources, charge reconciliation process, and documents charges accordingly.

Utilizes sound clinical judgment and effective time management skills.

Exhibits flexibility regarding workload and assignments, accepting delegated tasks while operating within the scope of practice.

Maintains compliance with certifications and eLearning assignments.

Performs clerical duties as necessary (i.e., answers phones, monitors lights).

Other duties as assigned.
Safety/Risk Management:

  • Adheres to Mercy policies and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights/regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and practices effective infection prevention techniques.
  • Assesses safety needs and ensures a secure environment: e.g., Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies; Safe Patient Handling.
  • Engages in Quality Improvement activities that ensure and enhance the quality of patient care.

Technology:

  • Utilizes unit-specific technology to perform daily tasks and maintain effective communication (e.g., computer, pagers, zone phones, Rover, etc.).

Qualifications:

Education:
High school diploma, G.E.D, CNA/CPTC, or enrolled in a healthcare career program through their high school curriculum, and/or a current co-worker of Mercy.

Experience:

None required - In the state of Missouri: If no previous experience, Mercy will provide a required 175-hour training program that meets the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services requirements. This program will be completed as part of the new hire orientation process and must be completed within 90 days of hire to remain in the PCA position per state guidelines.

Minimum Physical Requirements - Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds regularly. Position requires prolonged standing and walking each shift. Position requires the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.



Preferred Certifications:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
