Overview:

Under the supervision of the RN or LPN, assists in delivering personalized care to patients, aiming to achieve their highest level of wellness. Collaborates effectively with team members, recognizing the significance of collective goals. Executes designated clinical tasks and non-clinical support duties essential for patient care.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts daily hygiene routines
  • Facilitates routine daily activities:
mobility assistance, ensures nutritional needs are met (e.g.,

documenting intake, providing feeding assistance), positions patients, monitors for skin integrity, and utilizes appropriate supplies for daily care.

Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Collects and records patient information (e.g., vital signs) and documents in EMR.

Files reports accurately and promptly - prepares charts for admissions, discharges, and transfers.

May perform point-of-care testing or specimen collection as determined by unit needs (e.g., glucose monitoring).

Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel.

Communicates with other healthcare team members to optimize patient care.

Participates in the admission, discharge, and transfer processes for patients and their belongings.

Demonstrates responsible use of resources, charge reconciliation processes, and documents charges accordingly.

Utilizes sound clinical judgment and effective time management skills.

Exhibits flexibility regarding workload and assignments, accepting delegated tasks while operating within the scope of practice.

Maintains compliance with certifications and eLearning requirements.

Performs clerical duties as needed (i.e., answering phones, monitoring lights).

Other duties as assigned.
Safety/Risk Management:

  • Adheres to Mercy policies and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights/regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and practices effective infection prevention techniques.
  • Assesses safety needs and provides a secure environment: e.g., Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies; Safe Patient Handling.
  • Engages in Quality Improvement activities that ensure and enhance the quality of patient care.

Technology:

  • Utilizes unit-specific technology to perform daily tasks and maintain effective communication (e.g., computer, pagers, zone phones, Rover, etc.).

Qualifications:

Education:
High school diploma, G.E.D, CNA/CPTC, or enrollment in a healthcare career program through their high school curriculum, and/or a current co-worker of Mercy.

Experience:

None required - In the state of Missouri: If no previous experience, Mercy will provide a required 175-hour training program that meets the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services requirements. This program will be completed as part of the new hire orientation process and must be completed within 90 days of hire to remain in the PCA position per state guidelines.

Minimum Physical Requirements: Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds regularly; prolonged standing and walking each shift; ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.



Preferred Certifications:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
