Overview:

Under the supervision of the RN or LPN, the Patient Care Associate plays a crucial role in delivering personalized care to patients, aiming to help them achieve their optimal health and wellness.

This role involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, recognizing the significance of collective objectives. The associate will perform essential clinical tasks and non-clinical support activities vital for patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers daily hygiene and personal care routines.
  • Assists with daily living activities:
mobility support, ensuring nutritional needs are met (e.g., documentation of intake, assistance with feeding), repositioning patients, monitoring for skin integrity, and utilizing appropriate supplies for daily care.

Maintains Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Collects and records patient information (e.g., vital signs) and documents in EMR.

Accurately files reports and prepares charts for admissions, discharges, and transfers.

May conduct point-of-care testing or specimen collection as required by the unit (e.g., glucose monitoring).

Observes and reports any changes or unusual occurrences in patient conditions to the appropriate personnel.

Communicates effectively with other healthcare team members to enhance patient care.

Participates in the admission, discharge, and transfer processes of patients and their belongings.

Demonstrates responsible resource management, including charge reconciliation and accurate documentation of charges.

Utilizes sound clinical judgment and effective time management skills.

Exhibits flexibility in workload and assignments, accepting delegated tasks while adhering to the scope of practice.

Maintains compliance with required certifications and eLearning assignments.

Performs clerical duties as necessary (e.g., answering phones, monitoring lights).

Other duties as assigned.

Safety and Risk Management:

  • Adheres to Mercy policies and procedures related to safety, confidentiality, and patient rights/regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and implements effective infection prevention techniques.
  • Assesses safety needs and ensures a secure environment: e.g., Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies; Safe Patient Handling.
  • Engages in Quality Improvement initiatives that enhance the quality of patient care.

Technology Utilization:

  • Employs unit-specific technology to perform daily tasks and maintain effective communication (e.g., computer, pagers, zone phones, Rover, etc.).

Qualifications:

Education:
High school diploma, G.E.D, CNA/CPTC, or enrollment in a healthcare career program through their high school curriculum, and/or current employment with Mercy.

Experience:

No prior experience required. In Missouri, if no previous experience, Mercy will provide a mandatory 175-hour training program that meets state requirements.

This program will be completed as part of the new hire orientation process and must be finalized within 90 days of hire to maintain the PCA position per state guidelines.

Minimum Physical Requirements:

Position requires individuals to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds regularly, prolonged standing and walking each shift, and the ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties.



Preferred Certifications:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
