The Boston University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department is seeking a Campus Health and Safety Senior Specialist or Program Manager to join our dynamic team. This position assists the EHS Director of Campus Operations in providing comprehensive leadership, programmatic management, and facilitation for assigned safety programs and initiatives as well as serving as an EHS subject matter expert. The position is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing EHS's campus health and safety programs to provide a healthy and safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The position coordinates improvement activities across multiple academic and operational departments, serving as a highly visible and energetic champion of employee safety throughout the organization. This role requires daily interaction with staff and senior leadership at the Charles River and Fenway campuses. Critical thinking and decision-making skills are essential.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment across Boston University with extensive knowledge of health and safety standards, fire codes, and building code. This position is primarily based on the Charles River Campus while remaining flexible in assignments across all areas and departments served by EHS.

Job Responsibilities

Implement and manage health and safety programs including; required OSHA programs and fire safety programs.
Maintain necessary permits for regulatory compliance including inspections by the Boston Fire Department and the Mass. Department of Public Safety.
Conduct comprehensive inspections and risk assessments to identify potential environmental health and safety hazards.
Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks, ensuring a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors.
Design and deliver comprehensive health and safety training for faculty, staff and students.
Stay current with health & safety best practices, standards, and regulations. Provide briefings and training to EHS staff as necessary.
Collect data from inspections, external audits, corrective actions, fire drill performance, and incident response to generate reports for EHS leadership. Recommend improvements to enhance safety performance to ensure a culture of safety of continuous improvement.
Manage the EHS on-call program and provide emergency response guidance to EHS staff in response to incidents. Assist the university emergency management program in planning for emergency response exercises to prepare staff in incident response.
Manage the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program.
Regularly review incident and employee accident reports to mitigate hazards. Review near miss and injury data to identify trends. Recommend corrective actions and implement improvement strategies.

Required Skills
Bachelors degree and 8 years of experience
Safety Management or related experience. Preferably in a healthcare or academic setting.
Certification desirable, but not required, (CSP, CIH, CHMM, CHSP).
40-Hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training.
Working knowledge of Federal, State and local fire safety regulations, safety regulations and standards, building code, and environmental regulations related to construction-related hazardous materials

ON CALL REQUIREMENTS: This position is required to participate in the EHS on-call emergency response program. When on-call, the incumbent serves as first responder and as such is responsible for exercising professional judgment to independently determine response phases and mobilization of internal and external resources (BPD, BFD, EMS, regulatory agencies). Compares and evaluates possible courses of action and makes a decision after various possibilities have been considered and has the authority to make an independent choice and decision, free from immediate direction or supervision. While on-call, this position will be responsible for responding to calls in all buildings and areas and as such, employment is contingent upon initial and continued successful background checks This position requires attendance and participation at committee meetings and other meetings as required and may involve assignment of duties related to committee leadership or asked to serve as institutional liaison to external agencies.
