About the Opportunity

Brown University, a leading research institution, is seeking a highly skilled Archivist and Collections Manager to join its Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the museum's records and archives, ensuring proper arrangement, description, preservation, and access.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the museum's physical, digitized, and born-digital holdings, adhering to established standards and best practices.
  • Process, document, and manage the museum's multi-media archive, collaborating with senior staff as needed.
  • Arrange, inventory, catalog, house, digitize, and describe holdings according to current standards and best practices.
  • Communicate with stakeholders, coordinate archival visits, and supervise student staff.
  • Perform and coordinate new archival production, including digitization of various media types.
  • Maintain records of ownership and transfer, ensuring the physical care and proper arrangement of the museum's archives and records collections.
  • Ensure access and discoverability by producing, updating, and disseminating finding aids, coordinating with Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online.
  • Manage digital assets and rights, reproductions, and image use requests, producing prints or surrogates for use by the museum and external stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in archival and/or library science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of related professional full-time experience, with expertise in historical or cultural archival collections.
  • Working knowledge of metadata standards, relational collections management databases, rights and reproduction laws, and current knowledge of standards in the field.
  • Grant writing and project management experience preferred.

  • Exceptional organization, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, archival and library digitization and metadata standards, safe archival storage standards, and fabrication methods.
  • Analytical and writing skills relating to archival needs and reporting.
  • Familiarity with relational collections management systems.
  • Desired experience in developing policies and procedures and managing legacy collections.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
