This role is dedicated to supporting our esteemed Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant team within our inpatient unit. Our team is at the forefront of innovative treatments, including clinical trials for gene therapy targeting blood disorders and pioneering combined kidney and stem cell transplants.

We encourage a personal statement as part of your application. Please note that this position requires a minimum of one year of prior advanced practice experience, with a preference for candidates with backgrounds in Stem Cell Transplant or Pediatric Intensive Care.

Position Overview

This section outlines the fundamental nature and purpose of the role.

Nurse Practitioner (NP): The Nurse Practitioner operates under the established Nurse Practitioner Standardized Process Protocol, collaborating with supervising physicians to deliver comprehensive care for patients with both acute and chronic conditions. Responsibilities are defined by the NP and supervising physician, subject to approval by relevant medical and nursing authorities.

Physician Assistant (PA): The Physician Assistant works under the Physician Assistant Role Description, with specific duties determined in conjunction with supervising physicians and approved by appropriate medical and nursing administrators.

Key Responsibilities

The following essential functions are representative of the work performed in this classification. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

All employees must adhere to Joint Commission Requirements, including but not limited to cultural sensitivity, patient rights, ethical treatment, safety protocols, teamwork, and ongoing education.

All duties must be performed in accordance with the Hospital's Service Standards.

A. An NP/PA may provide only those medical services for which they are qualified, consistent with their education and training, and performed in collaboration with a physician.

B. An NP/PA should consult with a physician for any task or procedure that exceeds their competency level or refer such cases to a collaborating physician.

C. Scope of Practice for the NP/PA includes:

  • Assessing and managing patients with acute and chronic health issues in line with specialty protocols.
  • Conducting thorough patient histories and physical examinations.
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests as necessary.
  • Prescribing medications and managing treatment plans.
  • Coordinating laboratory tests and therapeutic procedures.
  • Arranging for necessary therapies and services.
  • Performing designated procedures upon demonstrating competency.
  • Securing informed consent when required.
  • Facilitating hospital admissions and discharges.
  • Enrolling patients in approved investigational studies under physician guidance.
  • Assisting in surgical procedures after appropriate training.
  • Addressing age-specific patient needs effectively.
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Recognizing urgent situations requiring immediate physician intervention.
  • Coordinating inpatient and outpatient care as needed.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal and clinical policies.
  • Participating in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Providing patient education and counseling.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

D. Supervision:

  • Supervision is provided by a physician with clinical privileges at the hospital or designated attending physicians.
  • Various supervision methods may include direct oversight, chart audits, and performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.

Physician Assistant (PA):

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Graduate of an accredited PA program.

Nurse Practitioner (NP):

  • Master's or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Graduate of an accredited NP program.

Licensure/Certification

Physician Assistant (PA):

  • Licensure as a Physician Assistant in California.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • DEA license for controlled substances if applicable.

Nurse Practitioner (NP):

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in California.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in California.
  • National Board Certification from an accredited agency.
