Position OverviewThis section outlines the primary responsibilities and purpose of the role.
Advanced Practice Nurse (APN): The Advanced Practice Nurse operates under the established Nurse Practitioner Standardized Process Protocol, as sanctioned by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). The APN is responsible for delivering comprehensive care and managing patients with both acute and chronic conditions, in partnership with the supervising physician, while adhering to standardized procedures. Specific responsibilities are determined collaboratively between the APN and supervising physician(s), and must receive approval from relevant medical and nursing administrators, the IDPC, and the governing medical board.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are representative of the typical responsibilities associated with this position. They are not intended to be exhaustive.
All personnel must comply with Joint Commission Requirements, which include but are not limited to cultural sensitivity, patient rights, ethical treatment, safety protocols, teamwork, and ongoing professional development.
All tasks must be performed in alignment with the Service Standards of the Hospital.
A. An APN may provide only those medical services for which they are qualified, consistent with their education, training, and experience, and in collaboration with a physician.
B. An APN must consult with a physician regarding any task or diagnostic issue that exceeds their competency level or refer such cases to a collaborating physician.
C. Scope of Practice for the APN:
- Assess and manage patients with acute and chronic health issues, following established protocols.
- Conduct thorough patient histories and physical examinations, noting both normal and abnormal findings.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests as necessary based on patient evaluations.
- Prescribe medications and manage treatment plans.
- Collect specimens for laboratory testing and therapeutic procedures.
- Coordinate referrals for physical, occupational, and respiratory therapies, as well as radiological services.
- Perform designated procedures upon demonstrating competency, adhering to written protocols.
- Ensure informed consent is obtained when necessary.
- Facilitate hospital admissions and discharges, completing requisite documentation.
- Participate in approved investigational studies as directed by the supervising physician.
- Assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of the attending physician, adhering to established protocols.
- Recognize and address age-specific patient needs.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
- Identify situations requiring immediate physician intervention and initiate appropriate emergency procedures.
- Coordinate patient care and services, ensuring seamless transitions between inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Promote collaboration among healthcare providers and community resources.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical standards.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide patient education and counseling.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
D. Supervision:
- Supervision is provided by the designated supervising physician with clinical privileges, or other attending physicians within the department. Standardized procedures approved by the supervising physician(s) and IDPC are mandatory.
- Supervision may include direct on-site, electronic, or telephonic oversight.
- Chart reviews may be conducted by the supervising physician or their designee as part of quality improvement efforts.
- Annual performance evaluations will be conducted by the Lead Advanced Practice Provider, incorporating feedback from supervising physicians and peers.
Applicants must possess a combination of education and experience that equips them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with any required licenses or certifications.
Advanced Practice Nurse (APN):
- Master's or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
- Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Licensure/Certification
Advanced Practice Nurse (APN):
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in California.
- National Board Certification from an accredited agency.
Note: New graduate NPs are allowed six months from graduation to obtain national board certification.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from an accredited organization.
- Furnishing license from the Board of Registered Nursing, if applicable.
- DEA license for controlled substances, if applicable.
