Agency Clarification

This position is open to U.S. Citizens and individuals participating in the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) within the local commuting area.

Key Responsibilities

This is a term appointment expected to last for a minimum of 13 months, with the possibility of extension up to a total of 4 years, depending on regulatory changes regarding term appointments. Please note that term positions do not confer permanent status within the Federal service.

The National Park Service reserves the right to extend the duration of this appointment based on regulatory changes at its discretion, without further competition. This does not imply any entitlement to an extension for the selected candidate.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Engage in and independently conduct a range of archaeological and cultural resource activities, including pre-fieldwork research, consultation, survey, reconnaissance, monitoring, test excavation, data recovery excavation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Provide expert technical assistance in various areas related to the archaeology function, including compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106, clearance and planning, archaeological assessments, evaluations, and field inspections.
  • Utilize appropriate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to deliver comprehensive and scientifically robust solutions. Employ automated methods for data collection, analysis, and illustration. Input data into digital formats and leverage computer applications for data analysis, manipulation, and presentation.
  • Assist in the preparation of correspondence and documentation to ensure compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and facilitate tribal consultation. Collaborate with project leads to support compliance, monitoring, and consultation requirements.
  • Maintain and update archaeological and cultural resource information in various databases and forms, integrating multiple software applications for resource documentation.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Appointment is subject to a background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Compliance with the Selective Service Registration Act is required for males.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is mandatory.
  • The selected candidate may be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of their official duties. Prior to the first operation of a government vehicle, and annually thereafter, the candidate must certify possession of a valid State-issued driver's license and submit a photocopy of the license.
  • Uniform compliance with National Park Service standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Weekend work may be necessary.
  • A one-year trial period may be required.
  • Overnight travel away from home may be required, with expectations of 7 nights per month, and occasionally up to 15 nights in certain months. A government charge card for travel purposes will be issued.
  • Training and maintenance of a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority may be required.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old with specific educational qualifications.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all relevant experience. To receive credit, the resume must clearly outline the nature of duties and responsibilities for each position, including employment dates and hours worked.

Basic Requirements for GS-09 Level:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with specific coursework in archaeology and related fields, including completion of an archaeological field school.
  • A degree in a related discipline may also be accepted, provided it includes relevant coursework.
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above requirements.
  • Four years of archaeological work experience demonstrating knowledge of professional archaeology principles and theories, including field experience.

Experience Requirements:

At least one year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-07 level, including conducting archaeological surveys, data recovery excavations, and project resource assessments. Education may also qualify if it includes relevant graduate coursework.

Volunteer Experience:

Experience gained through volunteer work will be credited, including participation in National Service programs and other organizations.

Education Documentation:

To qualify based on education, a legible copy of transcripts must be submitted, showing relevant coursework and grades.
