Position Summary:

The Research Engineer I will play a pivotal role in propelling the company forward through the strategic planning and execution of innovative, project-based experiments. The focus will be on evaluating novel materials across various departments, enhancing fabrication processes, and improving existing product lines. The individual will conduct data analysis to guide project objectives and will collaborate closely with project leads, program managers, and the broader scientific community to ensure project success. Strong judgment, effective communication, and time management skills are essential for this role. Candidates should be prepared to handle various chemicals, some of which may require specialized training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research, design, and develop materials, processes, systems, and equipment.
  • Lead the planning and execution of research and development projects.
  • Perform reactions, fabrication, and metrology tasks.
  • Define project scope, objectives, and deliverables.
  • Identify necessary project tasks and resources.
  • Manage project budgets, resource allocation, and timelines.
  • Guide and support project teams.
  • Prepare and present reports on project progress, challenges, and solutions.
  • Implement project changes to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Evaluate project results and conduct assessments.
  • Assist in transitioning R&D projects to prototype and full-scale manufacturing.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in relevant fields such as Glass Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry, or equivalent experience in glass manufacturing.
  • Experience in a laboratory environment, including safety protocols.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with ITAR regulations and compliance is preferred.
  • Experience in Optical Manufacturing is advantageous.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents and communicate effectively with team members and management.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined by U.S. law.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse personalities while exercising sound judgment.
  • Adaptability to changing conditions within the R&D team.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to stand, use hands, and reach with arms. Frequent walking, stooping, kneeling, and crouching may be necessary.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
  • May involve prolonged periods of sitting or standing and working in tight spaces.
  • Regular lifting and moving of 30-50 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • May involve exposure to oils, acids, and solvents.
  • Work is conducted in both laboratory and manufacturing settings, often with loud noise levels.
  • Personal protective equipment will be required.
