KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Branch Operations Supervisor is a pivotal role responsible for managing the daily functions of the library branch and leading the branch team. This position works closely with the Branch Services Managers and the Assistant Director of Branch Services to define branch objectives, foster a culture of delivering personalized, precise, and innovative services to library patrons, and enhance collections and programs to meet community demands.

Leadership and Management Duties:

  • Oversee branch operations in alignment with the Library's mission and strategic goals, ensuring staff provide exemplary service to library patrons. Design, implement, and assess services tailored to the community's needs.
  • Direct all branch activities and supervise assigned personnel. Create staff schedules and allocate tasks to ensure optimal service delivery.
  • Assist in recruiting new branch personnel, participate in relevant hiring committees, and provide training for new team members.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for branch staff, establish meaningful individual objectives, and support their achievement. Address performance concerns promptly and document as necessary.
  • Supervise both professional and support staff, ensuring effective leadership, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.
  • Communicate and enforce library policies and procedures; address patron concerns effectively. Guide staff in managing and documenting patron behavior policy violations.
  • Exhibit proactive leadership. Advocate for library initiatives, collaborate with staff, motivate engagement, and provide daily guidance and expertise.
  • Contribute as a member of the Library's leadership team. Participate in or lead workgroups focused on planning and executing programs, projects, and initiatives.
  • Facilitate regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication.

Community Engagement Responsibilities:

  • Provide outstanding service to the public, including reader's advisory and reference assistance.
  • Manage circulation tasks such as checkouts, check-ins, reserves, renewals, and fine assessments.
  • Oversee collection development and maintenance for the branch, selecting materials in accordance with the branch budget to reflect community needs.
  • Lead the planning of youth programming and develop adult programs, including managing audiovisual equipment for events. Organize exhibits and ensure library initiatives are integrated into branch services.
  • Supervise circulation operations, including:
    • Handling all monetary transactions at the circulation desk
    • Maintaining organized reserve shelves
    • Tracking overdue, lost, and missing materials
    • Overseeing the shelving of library resources
    • Processing deliveries and managing the collection
    • Monitoring public areas of the library.
  • Promote library services and engage in outreach efforts. Foster relationships with schools, community organizations, and agencies. Represent the Library at community gatherings and events.
  • Collaborate to enhance the visibility of branch events and services through various media. Contribute to the library's online presence.
  • Assist patrons in utilizing a variety of online resources and technologies, providing basic troubleshooting support.
  • Perform all duties with cultural sensitivity and a commitment to equitable service for marginalized or underserved populations.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Stay updated on professional trends and attend relevant meetings and training; may represent the Library in professional settings as appropriate.
  • Effectively manage the branch budget, ensuring responsible fiscal oversight.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as compiling statistics, generating reports, and ordering supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order within the library. Report necessary repairs and ensure both public and staff areas are well-kept.
  • Perform other duties as needed for the benefit of the Library.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited MLS program and experience working with diverse populations is required. In exceptional cases, specialized education, training, or experience may substitute for some of the required qualifications.

  • Proven experience in reference, readers' advisory, programming, outreach, collection development, and project management.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and leadership principles; ability to guide staff effectively.
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and reliability in a dynamic environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of 3 years of successful professional experience is strongly preferred. Previous public library experience and supervisory responsibilities, as well as fluency in a language other than English, are desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Ability to operate standard office equipment; transport materials weighing over 100 pounds; carry items weighing up to 30 pounds; maintain focus despite interruptions; communicate effectively with colleagues and the public; read and organize written materials; and shelve library items at various heights.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work in various library areas, including offices and training rooms, as required. Typical office conditions include noise, stress, and interruptions.

SCHEDULE: The work week consists of 37.5 hours, organized to best serve the Library's needs. The schedule includes evenings and weekends, along with participation in a Saturday rotation.
