KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: The O'Connell Branch Operations Manager plays a pivotal role in leading the daily functions of the branch while overseeing the development and training of the branch personnel. This position collaborates with other management staff to set branch objectives, foster a culture of personalized and innovative service, and curate collections and programs that align with community interests.
Leadership and Supervisory Duties:
- Oversee branch operations in alignment with the Library's mission, ensuring staff deliver exceptional service to patrons. Develop and assess services tailored to community needs.
- Manage all branch activities and supervise the assigned staff. Create staff schedules and assignments to maintain optimal service levels.
- Assist in the recruitment of new personnel, participate in search committees as needed, and provide training for new staff members.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations for branch staff, establish meaningful individual objectives, and support their achievement. Address performance concerns promptly.
- Guide professional and support staff, ensuring effective leadership, mentorship, and professional growth.
- Implement library policies and procedures; resolve patron concerns effectively. Lead staff in addressing and documenting policy violations.
- Exhibit active leadership by promoting library initiatives, collaborating with staff, and providing daily guidance and support.
- Contribute to the Library's leadership team, participating in or leading workgroups focused on program and project planning.
- Facilitate regular staff meetings to ensure clear communication and information sharing.
Public Service Duties:
- Provide outstanding service to the public, including reference and reader's advisory services.
- Manage circulation tasks such as checkouts, returns, reserves, renewals, and fines, while compiling relevant statistics.
- Oversee collection development and maintenance for the branch, selecting materials that reflect community needs within the allocated budget.
- Supervise youth programming and create adult programming, including the operation of audiovisual equipment for events. Plan and execute exhibits that engage the community.
- Lead circulation operations, ensuring:
- Accurate financial transactions at the circulation desk
- Efficient management of reserve shelves
- Oversight of overdue and missing materials
- Proper shelving of library resources
- Processing of deliveries and collection merchandising
- Monitoring of public library areas
- Promote library services through outreach efforts, maintaining relationships with schools and community organizations. Represent the Library at community events.
- Collaborate on publicizing branch events and services through various channels, including online platforms.
- Assist patrons with a variety of online resources and technologies, providing basic troubleshooting support.
- Perform all duties with cultural sensitivity and a commitment to equitable service for marginalized populations.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Stay updated on professional trends and attend relevant meetings and training sessions, representing the Library as needed.
- Effectively manage the branch budget, ensuring responsible fiscal practices.
- Handle administrative tasks such as compiling statistics, generating reports, and ordering supplies.
- Maintain a clean and organized library environment, reporting necessary repairs and ensuring orderliness in both public and staff areas.
- Fulfill other duties as required for the benefit of the Library.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: A Master's degree from an ALA-accredited MLS program is required, along with experience working with diverse populations. In exceptional cases, relevant education or experience may be considered.

- Knowledge of supervisory and leadership principles; ability to guide staff effectively.
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and reliability in a dynamic work environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of three years of successful professional experience is strongly preferred, particularly in public library settings with supervisory responsibilities. Fluency in a language other than English is also desirable.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Ability to operate standard office equipment; transport materials weighing over 100 pounds; carry baskets weighing up to 30 pounds; maintain focus despite interruptions; communicate effectively; read and organize written materials; and shelve library resources at various heights.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work in various library locations, including office areas and training rooms, with exposure to noise and interruptions.
SCHEDULE: The work week consists of 37.5 hours, requiring a five-day schedule that includes evenings and weekends, along with participation in a Saturday rotation.
