Supervisor - Machine Shop Manufacturing (Week Day Nights)

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Manufacturing Supervisor to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our manufacturing team, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of our machine shop, ensuring that all production activities are carried out safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of machine shop personnel to ensure that production schedules are met and quality standards are maintained.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to employees to help them improve their skills and performance.
  • Establish and maintain workstation assignments, employee training programs, and overtime schedules to ensure that the machine shop is running smoothly and efficiently.
  • Maintain and communicate machine shop schedule status to ensure that customer expectations are met.
  • Provide first-level escalation support to employees regarding HR issues, such as employee relations, worker's compensation, disciplinary actions, time cards, and PTO requests.
  • Identify and implement Continuous Improvement opportunities to improve process efficiency, reduce cycle and setup times, and improve overall productivity.
  • Maintain shop measuring equipment calibration programs to ensure that all equipment is calibrated according to schedule.
  • Maintain all shop programs, including 5S, Lean, Cleaning, and Safety.
  • Ensure that all team members follow work instructions, quality requirements, and processes.
  • Ensure accurate machine shop staff data recording, including clock-in/clock-out activities.
  • Provide continued training and skills development for team members and mentor early career team members.
  • Ensure start-up readiness for production.
  • Maintain machine shop organization, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Support design for manufacturing and provide job planning estimates.
  • Ability to perform interviews, evaluate talent, and provide hiring recommendations.
  • Safely work within an industrial environment.

Requirements:

  • 4 years minimum of management experience.
  • 7 years minimum experience in machining aerospace components.
  • Root cause and corrective action analysis experience.
  • Understanding of department KPIs to improve performance.
  • Excellent blueprint reading skills, including GD&T per ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard.
  • Strong communication skills with a heavy customer focus.
  • Must have a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Clear understanding of production versus development environments.
  • Fluent in the use of precision hand tools.
  • Familiar with the use of personal computers.
  • Self-motivation and ability to prioritize projects to meet completion dates.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience machining nickel-based stainless steel alloys, copper, titanium.
  • Tooling and fixture design.
  • 5S, Lean Manufacturing, or Kaizen experience.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM tools.
  • Experience operating heavy lifting equipment such as cranes and forklifts around flight-critical hardware.
  • Knowledge and understanding of CMM programming/operation.
  • Outside processing knowledge (heat treating, plating, coating, EDM, grinding, etc.).
  • Experience machining tight tolerance, high-value components.
