POSITION SUMMARY: This role involves providing exemplary service to a diverse range of library users while executing circulation tasks, assisting with reader guidance, and performing various administrative responsibilities throughout the library.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver high-quality and engaging service to library patrons.
  • Ensure the library environment remains organized and welcoming. Manage incoming materials and maintain proper shelving.
  • Handle circulation processes and manage patron accounts, including checkouts, returns, inquiries, reservations, renewals, and fine management.
  • Support patrons in finding books and information, as well as utilizing various technologies such as computers, tablets, and other digital devices, including basic troubleshooting.
  • Oversee public areas of the library to maintain a positive atmosphere.
  • Communicate library policies effectively and resolve patron concerns, collaborating with team members as necessary.
  • Promote library services and engage in outreach and programming initiatives, including setting up technology for events.
  • Participate in training sessions and collaborative projects aimed at enhancing library services.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support library operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the library's mission and strategic goals.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in all work.
  • Strong customer service orientation and dedication to public service.
  • Able to interact effectively with a diverse community in an urban environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a positive demeanor.
  • Good judgment and problem-solving abilities, especially in unexpected situations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting, with flexibility to assist during staff shortages.
  • Familiarity with current technologies and trends in library services.
  • Proficient in operating computers and various library systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree or coursework beyond high school is preferred. Proficiency in a language other than English is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. This includes the ability to operate standard office equipment, move materials weighing over 100 pounds, and maintain focus amidst moderate noise levels.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is conducted in various library settings, including public service desks and office areas.
  • Exposure to a dynamic environment with noise and frequent interruptions is typical.
  • Participation in ongoing educational programs is encouraged to stay current with industry developments.

SCHEDULE: The position entails a part-time work schedule of 15 hours per week, with potential evening and weekend shifts as needed.
