PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Under minimal supervision, deliver exceptional customer service to a diverse range of patrons across all age groups while executing circulation, reader advisory, and administrative tasks throughout the library.
- Provide outstanding and engaging service to library visitors.
- Ensure the library environment remains organized and tidy. Handle deliveries, merchandise, and shelve materials efficiently.
- Manage circulation and patron account responsibilities, including checkouts, check-ins, account inquiries, reservations, renewals, and fine assessments.
- Assist patrons in finding books and information, as well as utilizing various technologies (e.g., desktop computers, laptops, e-readers, tablets, scanners, and emerging STEAM technologies), offering basic troubleshooting and maintenance support.
- Oversee public areas of the library to maintain a welcoming atmosphere.
- Communicate library policies and procedures effectively; address patron concerns and refer to team members when necessary.
- Promote library services and participate in outreach and programming activities, including setting up and operating audiovisual and STEAM equipment.
- Engage in training sessions and collaborative workgroups for project and program planning and implementation.
- Perform additional duties as required for the benefit of the library.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of the library's mission, vision, values, and strategic objectives.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in all work.
- Strong customer service orientation and dedication to public service.
- Ability to engage with a diverse community in an urban environment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with a positive demeanor.
- Sound judgment and problem-solving capabilities, including managing unexpected situations.
- Strong teamwork abilities, with flexibility to assist during scheduling emergencies and vacations.
- Familiarity with current technology and technological trends.
- Proficient in operating computers, equipment, software, and systems.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree or coursework beyond high school is preferred. Proficiency in a language other than English is advantageous.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Ability to operate standard office equipment; transport materials weighing over 100 pounds across a level surface or ramp; carry baskets weighing up to 30 pounds; maintain focus on tasks despite frequent interruptions and moderate noise levels; communicate effectively and share accurate information with colleagues and the public; read and organize written materials; and place library items on shelves or carts at various heights.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work in designated areas, including public desks, office spaces, training rooms, and various library locations as necessary. Typical exposure to noise, stress, and interruptions in a vibrant urban public library. Participation in ongoing educational programs is encouraged to stay updated on professional developments.
SCHEDULE: The work week consists of 30 hours, scheduled in alignment with the library's needs. Availability for evening and weekend hours may be required.
