Position Overview

The Library Access Coordinator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will play a vital role in enhancing the user experience within the library environment. This position involves active participation in all aspects of circulation, reserves, and service desk operations, ensuring efficient management of physical spaces and assisting patrons in utilizing library resources effectively.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct assistance to patrons regarding library services, collections, and equipment.
  • Interpret and communicate library policies and procedures to users.
  • Support the training and development of staff and student employees.
  • Engage in activities such as locating books, shelving materials, collecting usage statistics, and processing financial transactions.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for service enhancements.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to resolve issues, correct discrepancies, and maintain the integrity of library collections.
  • Participate in various committees and projects aimed at improving library services.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

High school diploma or equivalent; a minimum of six months of relevant experience in library or service functions; familiarity with library catalogs; proficiency in basic business software (e.g., MS Office, email, calendaring); eagerness to learn new technologies; strong initiative and adaptability; ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment; excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills; capability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team.


Preferred:

College degree or relevant coursework; experience in an academic or research library; background in training or teaching; familiarity with specific library software utilized at MIT; experience in data management and presentation tools (e.g., Excel, Access, Tableau).


Work Environment:

This position involves physical activities such as moving objects weighing up to 40 lbs, pushing or pulling loaded carts, and shelving materials, with potential exposure to dust.


Employment Details:

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) with a schedule from Sunday to Thursday, 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM, subject to change based on operational needs.
