Position Overview:

Under general supervision and in accordance with established procedures and policies, this role provides essential support within various Library divisions, including Customer Service, Collection Services, and Programming & Public Services, as assigned. Specific responsibilities will vary based on division assignment.

Key Responsibilities:

Library Clerks are tasked with a variety of duties, which may include:

  1. Delivering front-line patron services, such as checking in and out library materials, assisting patrons with self-service terminals, and managing overdue fines.
  2. Providing assistance to library patrons with item retrieval, reference inquiries, and general service questions, while directing complex reference questions to a Librarian.
  3. Supporting the preparation of daily reserves and managing system holds.
  4. Utilizing the Library's automated integrated library system (ILS) to enter patron information and maintain online records.
  5. Maintaining equipment within the division and reporting any functionality issues to the supervisor.
  6. Inspecting returned materials for damages, shelving items, and ensuring an organized collection by reading shelves and identifying materials for repair or withdrawal.
  7. Offering general assistance at library service desks.
  8. Collaborating with full-time staff on program implementation and special projects.
  9. Assisting with marketing efforts and promoting library services by creating displays and promotional materials under supervision.
  10. Receiving and processing various materials, including periodicals and newspapers, and performing general copy-cataloging and data maintenance using the ILS.
  11. Reporting statistics and usage patterns as requested.
  12. Performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: 0-6 months of library-related experience is preferred, depending on division placement. Familiarity with computers, common office technology, Microsoft Office, and various software products is essential.

Interpersonal Skills: Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary for effective interaction with co-workers, vendors, residents, and the public.

Analytical Skills: The ability to prioritize work assignments, assist patrons with inquiries, and resolve basic operational issues is required.

Technology Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and common office technologies is required. Knowledge of Envisionware PC Res and Polaris ILS is preferred.

Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed in a library/office environment with frequent interruptions. The role requires the ability to speak, hear, and see, with both near and far vision capabilities. Physical demands include continuous walking, standing, balancing, and lifting library materials weighing up to 20 pounds, as well as pushing and pulling objects up to 80 pounds on a wheeled cart.

Reporting Relationships:
A. Reports to: Library Manager, Division Head, and/or Division Coordinator/Supervisor.
B. Supervises: This position does not supervise other employees.
