Position: Chief Financial Strategist
Hybrid work environment with a strong preference for Minneapolis-based candidates, though other locations may be considered.

The Finance Team

The Finance Department is tasked with providing leadership, direction, and oversight of the financial resources and reporting for our organization and its affiliates.

This includes comprehensive planning, accountability, monitoring, headquarters accounting, field financial support, internal controls, and financial reporting that adheres to US GAAP and international accounting standards.


Role Overview

The Chief Financial Strategist will oversee the overall financial management, reporting, and internal control systems of the organization. This role is crucial in ensuring compliance with audit standards, grant requirements, and the proper management of donor funds, while also serving as a liaison with Enterprises, Affiliates, and the Finance Committee.

Key responsibilities include safeguarding the organization’s financial assets by establishing robust financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.

This position will ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements for all accounting and financial reporting functions, as well as manage cost and general accounting, accounts receivable, and risk management.

The Chief Financial Strategist will embody the highest standards of integrity, leadership, and credibility within the organization and in interactions with donors and auditors.

As a member of the Platform Management Team, significant contributions to the strategic and operational planning of the organization will be expected.


Key Responsibilities


1. Financial Reporting and Compliance – 20%
Maintain policies and procedures that align with all US GAAP reporting standards and incorporate international accounting standards where applicable.

Manage the annual financial audit process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.

Oversee the preparation of annual 990 reporting in collaboration with external audit teams.


2. Financial Accountability and Risk Management – 20%
Promote financial leadership and efficiency through the development and maintenance of comprehensive financial policies and procedures.

Implement risk management tools to ensure adequate and efficient controls are in place.

Ensure compliance with donor requirements and generally accepted accounting principles.


3. Global Support Accounting Management – 10%
Ensure accurate and timely accounting, payroll, and tax reporting for the Global Support office.

Facilitate the timely submission of internal and external financial reports.


4. Technical Support for Enterprises and Affiliates – 20%
Provide accounting and system support to Enterprises and Affiliates through updated accounting and reporting systems.

Evaluate and recommend improvements in financial management policies to meet audit standards.


5. Financial Planning and Budgeting – 20%
Assist in forecasting the organization’s future financial needs and developing annual budgets.

Monitor financial reports for executive leadership and boards of directors.


6. Leadership and Team Development – 10%
Supervise and mentor finance staff, ensuring they are well-trained and clear on expectations.

Collaborate with Enterprise managers and Affiliate leaders to effectively manage finance personnel.


Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in finance/accounting; a master’s degree in a related field is preferred. CPA designation is preferred.

A minimum of 10 years of advanced finance, accounting, and senior management experience, ideally within the humanitarian sector.

Proficiency in accounting software packages, preferably Serenic/Sylogist Mission, and experience with USAID and government grants is strongly preferred.

Compensation

Salary starts at $120,000+, commensurate with experience.
