Job Overview

Position Summary

The Surgical Services Scrub Technician, under the guidance of the Director and/or Clinical Coordinator, is tasked with the preparation of instruments and equipment for surgical interventions, employing suitable techniques. This role includes providing technical support as directed and assisting with various procedures. The Scrub Technician is responsible for assisting and/or performing patient-related tasks within the defined competencies of their specific unit. They must seek guidance when necessary, aid in data collection, and organize patient care responsibilities while maintaining accountability for their own practice and delegated functions. Throughout their designated work period, they ensure care aligns with the overall patient care plan from admission to discharge, adhering to ethical and legal standards.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Demonstrates the ability to engage with patients of diverse backgrounds, including those who are ill, disabled, or emotionally distressed, as well as their families and hospital staff.

Exhibits the necessary visual and auditory skills to assess, document, and implement actions to meet patient and family needs.

Effectively manages unpredictable situations with tact and professionalism.

Responds promptly to emergencies and crises, prioritizing technical needs based on patient conditions.

Ensures safe patient care during the intra-operative phase, including the handling of specimens and medications.


Communication and Team Collaboration
* Effectively communicates the need for referrals to the RN based on patient and family requirements.

Accurately processes and conveys provider orders to the RN.

Facilitates efficient turnover of surgical rooms by ensuring the availability of necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment while assisting the surgical team as needed.

Assists in updating physician preference cards as necessary.

Supports the healthcare team during surgical procedures by applying knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to the surgical context.


Equipment Management and Inventory Control
* Responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and restocking medical equipment and supplies as required.

Demonstrates proficiency in the use of department-specific medical equipment, adhering to established competency standards.

Manages equipment, supplies, and medications appropriately.

Prepares necessary instruments, sutures, and supplies for specific procedures, anticipating the sequence of events and the needs of both the surgeon and the patient.


Compliance and Safety
* Accountable for reporting safety-related incidents promptly through the designated reporting tools; participates in all safety training programs; performs duties in a safe manner; monitors the work environment for potential safety issues and ensures compliance among colleagues.

Ensures all required certifications and licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.

Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the required timeframe.

Practices within accepted ethical and legal standards.


Qualifications

Completion of an OR Technician program - Required

High School Diploma or GED - Required

BLS Certification - Required

Must obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leadership.

Recent experience as an OR Technician - Required

Preferred experience in a direct patient care setting as a CNA/PCT or in Sterile Processing.

Availability for on-call duties is required, with a response time of 20 minutes.
