Job Overview

Position Summary

The CVOR Surgical Technician, under the guidance of the Director and/or Clinical Coordinator, plays a crucial role in preparing necessary supplies and equipment for surgical interventions, employing suitable techniques. This role involves providing technical services as assigned and assisting with various procedures. The technician supports and/or executes patient procedures that align with their unit-specific competencies. They are expected to seek assistance when needed, gather data, organize aspects of patient care for which they are accountable, and maintain responsibility for their practice and delegated functions. Throughout their work period, they ensure care is consistent with the overall plan from admission to post-discharge. They operate within accepted ethical and legal standards.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Demonstrates the ability to connect with and assist ill and disabled patients across all age groups, including bilingual patients and those experiencing emotional distress, as well as collaborating effectively with hospital staff.

Exhibits visual and auditory acuity, along with the capability to assess, document, and implement necessary actions to meet patient and family needs.

Handles varying and unpredictable situations with professionalism when interacting with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, and the general public.

Responds promptly and professionally to emergency and crisis situations.

Prioritizes and addresses technical requirements to accommodate patient conditions.

Ensures safe patient care during the intra-operative phase, including proper specimen handling and medication management.


Communication, Documentation, and Team Collaboration
* Effectively communicates the need for appropriate referrals to the RN based on expressed patient and family needs.

Accurately processes and relays provider orders to the RN.

Facilitates efficient room turnovers by ensuring appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and assists the team as necessary.

Contributes to updating physician preference cards as needed.

Supports the healthcare team during surgical procedures by integrating knowledge of anatomy and physiology with the surgical process.


Equipment and Inventory Management
* Responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and restocking equipment and supplies as required.

Demonstrates proficiency in using department medical equipment, referring to unit-specific competency standards.

Manages equipment, supplies, and medications appropriately.

Prepares necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for specific procedures while anticipating the sequence of events and the needs of the surgeon and patient.


Compliance and Safety
* Accountable for reporting any safety-related incidents promptly through the designated reporting tool; participates in all safety training programs; performs duties safely; monitors the work environment for potential safety issues and ensures compliance among colleagues.

Ensures all required certifications and licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.

Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the designated timeframe.

Operates within accepted ethical and legal standards.


Qualifications

Completion of OR Technician Program - Required

High School Diploma or GED - Required

BLS Certification - Required

Must obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leadership.

Recent Experience as OR Technician - Required

Previous experience in a direct patient care setting as a CNA/PCT or SPD is preferred.

Availability for on-call duties is required - must be able to respond within 20 minutes.
