Operating Room Scrub Technician

Position Summary
The Operating Room Scrub Technician, under the guidance of the Director and/or Clinical Manager/Coordinator, is tasked with the preparation of necessary supplies and equipment for surgical interventions, employing suitable techniques. This role provides assigned technical services and supports patient procedures within the defined scope of unit-specific competencies. The position operates within a hospital-based, inpatient environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
* Effectively prioritizes and addresses technical requirements to align with patient conditions.
Assists the surgical team during operations by applying knowledge of anatomy and physiology in conjunction with the surgical process.
Ensures safe patient care throughout the intra-operative phase, which includes proper specimen handling and medication management.
Equipment Management
* Prepares the necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for specific surgical procedures, anticipating the sequence of events and the needs of both the surgeon and the patient.
Maintains, monitors, and replenishes equipment and supplies as required.
Opens surgical instruments for each case appropriately, anticipating the physician's requirements during procedures.
Department Collaboration
* Accurately communicates provider preferences to the nursing staff.
Facilitates efficient turnover of surgical rooms as a scrub technician, ensuring the availability of appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment while assisting the team as necessary.
Participates in the updating of physician preference cards as needed.
Engages in the training and education of new staff and colleagues regarding aseptic techniques and processes.
Compliance and Safety
* Adheres to all regulatory and organizational standards that influence patient care and safety, along with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a manner that is both safe and cost-effective.
Remains informed and compliant with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies relevant to the employee's area of responsibility.
Ensures that all required certifications and/or licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.
Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific education within the designated timeframe.
Maintains accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, electronic medical record entries, and patient responses.
Responsible for promptly reporting any safety-related incidents through the designated reporting tool; participates in all safety training programs; performs duties in a safe manner; monitors the work environment for potential safety issues and ensures compliance with safety practices among colleagues.
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED - Required
Completion of OR Technician education - Preferred
Certification and Licensure
OR SCRUB TECH NON CERTIFIED -
BLS - Required upon hire
OR SCRUB TECH CERTIFIED -
BLS - Required upon hire
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery Certified (TS-C) - Required
Employee will maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by their departmental leader.
Experience
