Job Overview

Position Summary

The Surgical Scrub Technician, under the guidance of the Director and/or Clinical Coordinator, is tasked with the preparation of necessary supplies and equipment for surgical interventions, employing suitable techniques. This role involves providing technical services as directed and assisting with various procedures. The Technician is responsible for supporting and/or executing patient procedures within the defined scope of their unit-specific competencies. They are expected to seek assistance when needed, contribute to data collection, and organize patient care responsibilities while maintaining accountability for their practice and delegated functions. Throughout their designated work period, they ensure that care aligns with the overall plan from admission to post-discharge. The Technician adheres to accepted ethical and legal standards.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Capable of engaging with and assisting ill and disabled patients across all age groups, including bilingual patients, those in emotional distress, and their families, as well as collaborating effectively with hospital staff.

Possesses the necessary visual and auditory acuity to assess, document, and implement actions to meet patient and family needs.

Able to manage unpredictable situations with tact when interacting with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, and the public.

Responds promptly and professionally to emergency and crisis situations.

Prioritizes and addresses technical requirements to accommodate patient conditions.

Ensures safe patient care during the intra-operative phase, including proper specimen handling and medication management.


Communication and Team Collaboration
* Effectively communicates the need for appropriate referrals to the RN based on patient and family requirements.

Accurately processes and conveys provider orders to the RN.

Facilitates efficient turnover of surgical rooms by ensuring the availability of necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment while assisting the team as required.

Assists in updating physician preference cards as necessary.

Supports the healthcare team during surgical procedures by applying knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to the surgical process.


Equipment Management and Inventory Control
* Responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and restocking medical equipment and supplies as needed.

Demonstrates proficiency in the use of departmental medical equipment, referring to unit-specific competency standards.

Manages equipment, supplies, and medications appropriately.

Prepares the necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for specific procedures, anticipating the sequence of events and the needs of both the surgeon and the patient.


Compliance and Safety
* Accountable for reporting any safety-related incidents promptly through the designated reporting tool; participates in all safety training programs; performs duties in a safe manner; monitors the work environment for potential safety issues and ensures compliance among colleagues.

Ensures that all required certifications and licenses are current and valid prior to expiration.

Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the designated timeframe.

Practices within established ethical and legal guidelines.


Qualifications

Completion of an OR Technician Program - Required

High School Diploma or GED - Required

BLS Certification - Required

Must maintain appropriate clinical competencies as assigned by departmental leadership.

Recent Experience as an OR Technician - Required

Preferred experience in a direct patient care setting as a CNA/PCT or in Sterile Processing.

Availability for on-call duties is required, with a response time of within 20 minutes.
