GENERAL OVERVIEW

Under the supervision of the Communications Supervisor, this role entails managing police and emergency management communication tasks as a certified first responder. Responsibilities include coordinating radio and telephone communications in adherence to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to assist callers effectively. This position requires responding to critical incidents that impact public safety or law enforcement.

As the primary liaison for agency officers and various law enforcement entities, you will provide necessary assistance, information, and coordination. Additional responsibilities may include serving as the Project Liaison for specialized areas and projects. Other duties may be assigned as necessary, in compliance with all Agency, Division, and Branch regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

Graduation from High School or possession of a GED.

Experience:

  • PCO I: No prior experience required.
  • PCO II: Minimum of one year of experience as a Police Communications Operator I, including dispatch and emergency management communications.
  • PCO III: At least three years of experience as a Police Communications Operator, with one year as a Police Communications Operator II.
  • PCO IV: Four years of experience as a Police Communications Operator, including one year as a Police Communications Operator III.
  • PCO V: Eight years of experience as a Police Communications Operator, with four years as a Police Communications Operator IV.

Licensure:

For PCO I and II, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license is required. Candidates must obtain specific certifications within designated timeframes after employment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Retention in this position is contingent upon successful completion of required examinations and maintenance of necessary licenses and certifications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of public safety communication protocols, Federal Communications Commission regulations, and local geography is essential. Skills in operating telecommunications equipment and providing exceptional customer service are critical. The ability to manage crisis situations, maintain accurate logs, and adapt to changing priorities is necessary for success in this role.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires the ability to work in a dynamic environment, including the necessity to adjust to varied schedules and work overtime as needed. Candidates must be prepared to work in potentially hazardous weather conditions and adhere to all safety protocols.
